Tomato juice doesn't work well at all to remove skunk odor on dogs. H2O2 and dish soap is ok for the initial treatment. If you really want to get the smell off the animal enough so you can let them in your house again, get some Scent-Away soap. It's the same soap many hunters use before going into the woods to remove human scent.

I happily went about 30 years since my last encounter with a skunk here in ne fl, but this spring I saw at least 4 and smelled many more. Looks like they are trying to make a comeback at least in my neck of the woods.

Shooting a skunk in the head will result in a spray more often than not. They are also major carriers of rabies, although they do not get symptomatic. Shooting in the brain or spinal column can result in a nice rabies tainted mist. Better to shoot them in the chest. They do have very poor eyesight, and if you walk up to them slowly you can get within 10 feet or so and they won't see you coming and are less likely to spray.

Looks like skunks are the majority of all rabies cases in kansas. I didnt realize that and hard to tell, they are really not afraid of much. Another thing to do, I better head the ole dogs to the vet for their shots.

That's for sure!!

Current rabies shots are mandatory for any pets that spend any time outdoors!!!!!

There are all kinds of rabies carriers in Kansas.

Skunks, bats, coons, fox, coyotes, etc.

There was a very pretty skunk right behind my house this morning. I've had skunks around our place for years and thus far they've never been a problem so I leave them alone.

Water, blanket or opaque trap walls will minimize their reflex to spray.
I think skunks consistently have a high percentage of rabies of those animals tested so I won't play those odds.
They have a nice pelt but you don't have much trouble picking out those who put them up regularly, wouldn't dream of eating one.

In order to confirm an animal is rabid, the animal must be tested. In order to be tested, the brain must be intact. IOWs, if you suspect an animal is rabid, shoot them in the chest, so they can be tested and local authorities notified if the test is positive. Rabies cases/outbreaks need to be recorded for the safety of the general public.

Around here, warm weather has melted the knee deep snow cover and skunks(along with possums) are out in full force and actively seeking food. Preferred wild food for skunks is not yet abundant or readily available so they travel longer distances to find it. This is why they tend to head towards human habitation and their garbage, compost piles or cat food placed outside. Suet cakes used for bird feed and bird feed itself will also attract them as will grease residue left on BBQ grills.
