DANGIT, I missed!

We'd been gone all day to inlaws in Seguin. Wife's cousin's daughter is getting married tomorrow and wife's daughter, SIL, and grand baby are in from Washington state. The baby is 7 months old and Holly's first chance to see him. Her cousin has 140 acres and a stocked tank. Caught a lunker bass yesterday, released it as it was a sow full of eggs. It was near 8 lbs, 23" long. Caught a couple of smaller ones today and fileted 'em.

So, anyway, we get home and I'm tired, lay out on the couch watching "Pickers" on history channel. Wife gets off the computer, I get up to get on and look out in the back. There's a sow hog and 12 piglets in the back yard. I didn't see 'em at the feeder, but no doubt they were eating. It was near sun down. I stumble over myself to get to the back, load my .308, and sneak out the door. I would have been much quicker if I'd just worked the bolt on my Remington 597 magnum. They were no more'n 50 yards, could have taken a head shot, but by the time I got out there and rested the gun, they were at the edge of the woods evacuating. I took a shot at the sow's butt, think I shot low.

I need to set my trap again, I guess. We saw a sow, boar, and 4 piglets cross the road just as we were leaving this morning. Dang, all of a sudden we're surrounded by pigs.

And that is a fitting statement for SC ..... even DNR begs us to hunt them to extinction! And I am not sure 30 rounders will help!

We've been here 4 months and I've had the trap here for 2. Yet to catch one, but I think my luck may soon change. I can tell ya this, though, from now on when I'm squirrel hunting at dusk or dawn, I'm going to either carry the .22 mag or load my 12 with one barrel a slug. If I hunt squirrel with my .22 pistol, I'll bring a suitable rifle or shotgun along for pigs. Seeing 'em before dark got me goin'.

I know that feelin' Mac! We've got cottontail rabbits around here by the side-load trailerful. Tearin' up my backyard fiercely. I got out my .22 rifle the other night, just at dark, snuck out the garage side door, used the b-b-q grill for a table. Since we live surrounded by houses, I used a CB long. First shot, rabbit didn't even flinch, put in another, this one made him flop over backwards. Fished me off I missed that first one, maybe I ought to wear my glasses huh?

Seguin is thick with them. I hunted off Sweet home road a few months ago and saw 2 dozen easy. Keep that thing loaded for tonight.

Yeah, we're east of my wife's inlaws in Seguin. We're between Hallettsville and Eagle Lake near Sheridan. We do have our fair share of hogs here, it seems, though.

Well, turns out I didn't miss after all. I was leaving yesterday and there were a bunch of vultures down the road a piece. I'm thinkin' at that point, maybe I didn't miss. It was on the neighbor's place. So, after letting the chickens out, setting my hog trap and adding corn to a feeder this morning, I rode down the road on my little dirt bike. There were vultures in the ditch and a tree, saw something black in the woods. It was the sow, looked to be maybe 150 lbs. Woulda been tasty, but oh, well. I had a bad shot, her butt, but being as it was a pig, I figured a dead pig is a good pig even if I didn't recover it. At least I know my marksmanship isn't slipping THAT bad.
