Data point for current price of .410 ammo

I apologize to the OP for going off-topic.

Here are what standard 410 chokes should be.

Full - 0.398"
Modified - 0.402"
Improved cylinder - 0.404"
Cylinder - 0.405"

Thanks. Those would be on the small side(at least the bore diameter)? Some measurements I just found start with a cylinder bore diameter of .409"

I found these figures for diameter and choke constriction, starting with a cylinder bore diameter of .41", which is what I would have expected, but they also show tighter choked I.D.:

Full Choke, .396, .014
Modified, .405, .005,
Imp. Cyl., .408, .002,
Cylinder, .410, None

Anyway, I'm relieved to know my .375" buckshot will probably be able to get through the muzzle of my old full choke Stevens single shot. :)

And that is why I said that the standard choke sizes SHOULD be. There are always allowed tolerances and each manufacturer will do things differently. Some might machine chokes to the minimum while others machine their chokes to the maximum allowed tolerances.

Look for excess pressure and hard recoil when shooting 0000 buckshot through a full choke. You have to remember to take into account the thickness of the was too. The thickness of Claybuster 410 wads is 0.030" per side, which will additional 0.060" to the overall diameter. The combined diameter of 000 buckshot and wad will be around 0.430" + 0.005"

I measured a single pellet of Hornady 000 buckshot inside a Claybuster wad and the overall measurement is 0.400" The nominal size of 000 buckshot is 0.350". Hornady's 000 buckshot runs from 0.345" to 0.350"

A quick follow up: I bought that ammo Thursday. Got a buddy who purchased a 20 gauge Henry Axe (and has a .410 Mossberg Shockwave for the wife) and after talking with him about the ammo he decided he wanted to buy some. So we hopped in his Jeep and drove down to the local Cal Ranch yesterday.

Ammo price had changed for the .410 2 and 1/2 Federal 8 shot. Now was 15 or $16.99 a box.

Speaking with the retiree who works there part time (guess that doesn’t really make him retired) he said he didn’t know what was up because he hadn’t worked the past week. Stated they could have been on sale although I didn’t see anything stuck to the shelf saying they were.

At any rate my buddy picked up a couple of boxes and I picked up one and another box of the Super X 20 gauge 5 shot and one box of Fed 20 gauge 7.5 shot game loads. Both whose price had not changed from above.

While milling around the ammo section I noticed SAR USA (not familiar with the brand) 12 gauge Buck 00, 2 and 3/4, 9 pellets per round at $12.99 per box of 10. Thought that was reasonable and picked up 3 boxes of those.
I don't know about shotgun shells but Sar USA 9mm seem pretty good to me. I picked up a few boxes a couple weeks ago and no problems at all, good as any. I have a Sar b6. At around 400 rounds into it not single fail, accurate and has had no problems with any brand ammo I've put into it. Fastly becoming my favorite handgun of all time.

I actually found some Barnual slugs at the Harrisburg sportsman show this year. I got 3 box's of 5. Of course now I wish I got 4 or 5 of them. 2 bucks a shell. All brass, berdan may try to convert them to 209.

I was very lucky today and found Remington Extreme Long Range for $21.99/25 at Bass Pro.

I was so happy to have finally found them I didn’t balk at the price.

I found some of that today as well. Kinda pricey, only bought a box. There is a larger local store that has STS for $5 a box cheaper. Wonder how much different the XLR is vs the STS

From my M6 Scout .22/.410 with full choke at 20 yds on an 8.5x11" target, I get tight groups of 3 on target from 2.5" shells with 3 #000 shot and very loose patterns of 3 on target from 3" shells with 5 #000 shot with 2 off the paper (Winchester brand). I am sure other people would have different experiences with their .410 and ammo. The point is test your gun and see how it works with available ammo.

The M6 is a gun I take to the mountain when I am not going to the mountain to shoot but might need a gun.

@Carl N. Brown have you tried any 00 buckshot in your M6 Scout? I have found that 00 buckshot works better with a full choke while 000 buckshot works better in a cylinder bore choke.

Here is how 3" 000 buckshot does out of my Mossberg Shockwave and 500 with the 18.5" cylinder bore barrel.

I was in the CAL Ranch store in Flagstaff, Az. earlier this week. 3” .410 7 1/2 were $21.99 a box, so I passed.

I did buy a case of 1,000 9mm Blazer brass 124 gr fmj and a case of 250 Federal 20 ga 2 3/4” 7.5 though. :)

Stay safe.

The first thing I did after I bought a .410 was buy a used reloading press in .410 for $75. It’s worth its weight in gold for when I want to shoot.

THIS is what I need to find….. have loaded 12 and 20 gauge for years. Just pick up a very minty 410 Wingmaster for some additional fun/ frustration for skeet. Would love to find some reasonable 3” #8’s (right )…….will keep an eye out for a 410 press.

I think I have seen two or three boxes of 410 on the shelves near me in past couple of years. The last box I've seen was maybe a year ago at $38.
As far as I'm concerned there is no need to even put it on the shelf at that price. I'm not buying.

Agreed, I’m keeping my eyes out for a 410 press and buy hulls from BPI…..they’re only 15 minutes from where I live.

The last .410 shells I bought were a few years ago at $10-$12 a box. I buy by the case and 2-1/2” skeet loads as that is my most use of the gauge.

I buy primarily Winchester ammunition because it loads well. I avoid the other brands because I do not want to change my press for small runs of different components. Not an issue really, but choose a component combination and stick with it. Life will be easier.

When I was shooting competitive skeet, I’d use .410 bore as an attitude adjuster. It was good for correcting problems but it also would exaggerate some bad habits.

@cfullgraf, you make some good points. I am the same way when it comes to reloading, I stick with one brand/type of hull as much as possible so I don't have to keep adjusting the press. Back when I did shoot skeet, I also used Winchester AA hulls since they are the best for reloading.

I use to stick with Winchester Super X for all of my 3" shells but I finally wore out most of those hulls. I bought a bunch of 3" Cheddite hulls a few years ago and have been using them for all of my hunting and SD loads.

A 410 will definitely humble people on the skeet range.
