Hi Folks!

If you've been following our youtube channel squirrel hunting adventures you'll know that my daughter has aspirations to go deer hunting when she finally meets the Alberta minimum age requirement of 12. She just turned 11 and I figured we better get started on developing proficiency with a centerfire rifle that she can take hunting.

I'm a pretty big fan of the CZ527 Carbine, and when I found out that they made a youth version I started looking and looking for one. It took a while to find one, but when I did I pounced quickly and a couple days later I was giddily developing some low-recoil handloads that I'd feel comfortable using to introduce my 4 foot tall 75lb tiger to her first centerfire rifle. It did not take long to find a good, very light load, and I set the rifle up with a Leopold VX2 2-7x33 in medium rings. She's been dry-firing it in the basement with snap caps, and then a couple weeks ago we got the chance for the first time to head out and fire it for real.

I brought out my iron-sighted CZ527 carbine, and she shot the CZ527 Youth Carbine. We took turns ringing an 11 inch AR500 steel gong set up at 100 meters - it was a TOTAL RIOT and I have trouble wiping the grin off my face any time I think back and fondly remember.

I'll keep her using the reduced recoil loads for the next year while we work on her positional shooting and rifle fundamentals, then next summer I'll start bumping up her charge weight and get her used to the stouter recoil of a proper hunting load. The plan is to limit shots to 100 meters or less, and as her confidence grows I'll gradually decrease the plate size to 8 inches.

I thought hunting/shooting was fun before - but then I had kids and can't tell you how much more fun it is to share it with them...:)

Thanks for watching!

Cheers,

Brobee

I gave one of those to a Preacher buddy of mine, over in Joplin, MO. He loves it! It is really a nice rig! I'm glad your baby wants to hunt too! Have a ball dude...life is short...she will be married & having Grand Babies before you can say "Scat"! ha

I hope to get my daughter out in the blind with me either this year or next. I built her a .243 Rem rifle out of one I was bequeathed from my dad's estate. I found a Rem 700 youth stock, had a KDF muzzle brake installed, put better glass on it and tuned the trigger. Then to make it really hers I found the camo-wrap! Her grandpa would be amused!

Priceless smile on her face. First it was the son and daughter and now it's the grandson and granddaughter. There is just something about watching them grow up. :) Wait till she gives you grandchildren.

What a cute pic:)

Mu daughter got her first Whitetail (a large Doe) in Virginia last season just before her 10th birthday with a 243 100 gr. Federal. She drilled it grazing the back of the heart at 90 yrds. and it jumped and fell w/o taking a single step!

She loved it:) No muzzle break should be needed even for a kid w/ 243. My daughter only weighed 84 lbs, and never felt a thing.

She got a turkey on her first youth day hunt this year two.

223 or 7.62x39?

I have the CZ 527 youth carbine in 7.62x39, mine likes the Wolf 124 grain HP steel cased ammo ($0.25/round) and is most accurate with the Double Tap 123 grain tsx (about $2/round).

An FYI for your 527, I replaced the stock sights with a NECG peep (ghost ring) on the rear and a Patridge post on the front -- much nicer than the stock sights IMO.

That picture gave me my first smile of the young morning. That's a perfect rifle and you topped it with the ideal scope.

I enjoyed the squirrel hunting videos very much and I have been wondering when you would next post.

You are my candidate for the luckiest man alive! God bless you and your family...

Pretty cool. Watched the video. Why is she struggling with the bolt so much? Is it that stiff?
