For all interested persons in all 50 States, we are gathering folks to appear at the DC Gun Control Unit and apply for a carry permit in accordance with existing DC Law.

The cost is $35.

Yes, we will be denied BUT the point is that we will be. A denial of 50+ applications made on the same day pretty much says that the denials are arbitrary in nature and would leave the District open to some serious scrutiny as well as lay the groundwork for some legal action in the future.

Afterwards, we will probably go to a gun-firendly state (Va) for a meal and fellowship.

Feel free to contact me via email: docwatson223 at gmail dot com

also, see www.opencarry.org in the DC section for more details

I'd be interested in hearing more about this.

I'd also be happy to promote it on my website. Let me know what I can do to help.

There seem to be two schools of thought in the gun rights movement--the "sit back and wait till the time is right" school and the "be noisy, get the issue in motion, and take action" school.

Guess which one I like. :)

Update 10/20/2006

I spoke with Officer Thompson in the GCU and she seemed *very* upset that we could come down and apply for a CHP. She also didn't understand that there is an existing statute on the books to do so.

We will be applying IAW current DC Law and will be citing the statute as the reason.

§ 22-4506. Issue of licenses to carry pistol.

The Chief of Police of the District of Columbia may, upon the application of any person having a bona fide residence or place of business within the District of Columbia or of any person having a bona fide residence or place of business within the United States and a license to carry a pistol concealed upon his or her person issued by the lawful authorities of any State or subdivision of the United States, issue a license to such person to carry a pistol within the District of Columbia for not more than 1 year from date of issue, if it appears that the applicant has good reason to fear injury to his or her person or property or has any other proper reason for carrying a pistol and that he or she is a suitable person to be so licensed. The license shall be in duplicate, in form to be prescribed by the Mayor of the District of Columbia and shall bear the name, address, description, photograph, and signature of the licensee and the reason given for desiring a license. The original thereof shall be delivered to the licensee, and the duplicate shall be retained by the Chief of Police of the District of Columbia and preserved in his or her office for 6 years.

Dang, looks like I could apply if I were there, as I'm a permit holder in the United States (MN). Sadly I'll be about 1600 miles away.

I would like to know what a "proper reason for carrying a pistol" is. I would think that being in the city with the highest homicide rate in the country would be "proper" enough.

BTW, I fully support this initiative. Make sure that EVERYONE follows all the appeal avenues available to the permit application process. Tie 'em up with their own flawed beaurocracy.

I've heard that the Hawaii CCW license is supposedly the least-issued may-issue CCW license, with only 1 license ever issued. I wonder if the DC license has ever been issued to anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't. If it has, and DC has any sort of FOIA request in their local laws it might not hurt to try and find out what other people have used.

...if it appears that the applicant has good reason to fear injury to his or her person or property or has any other proper reason for carrying a pistol...

From The Washington Post: Liveliest D.C. Neighborhoods Also Jumping With Robberies http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/12/AR2006101201813.html

Here are three points from this story that should help prove that have good reason to be scared while in gun-free :barf: DC:

  • The statistical analysis encompassed thousands of cases, including about 2,900 this year alone

  • Police said that at least 14 homicides this year stemmed from robberies

  • There are more robberies per capita in the District than in New York, Los Angeles and other large cities

If it has, and DC has any sort of FOIA request in their local laws it might not hurt to try and find out what other people have used.
