So recently I applied for my DC, Maryland and Utah CCW permits and I had the meeting at DC police to drop off the paperwork on Tuesday (the 3rd) and this morning (Friday the 6th) I received my approval from DC police.

It takes longer than this to register a gun, heck even when they were fully staffed pre COVID the fastest I ever got a registration back was 11 days.

Yet somehow my CCW which according to them is supposed to take even longer only took 3 days!

Don't get me wrong I am not complaining I am just completely surprised.

You're between UT and DC? Do you fly or drive? Curious if you fly with a handgun? I've considered it when traveling to a reciprocal state, but air travel is complicated enough.

They may be processing apps faster than they expected, or less interest in permits than anticipated? Hope it all works out-

No I live in DC but Utah just covers a lot of states DC and Maryland don’t for reciprocity. FL would have also been another good option but Utah was easier to do as they will take fingerprints from private providers vs Florida I would need to find a local police or sheriff department that actually dose the physical cards which many don’t around here

Ok, I see it is a reciprocity strategy. I'm in NC, with pretty broad reciprocity so that never occurred to me.

Funny, @DeepSouth, our county has grown so much and last year when I went to get fingerprints for an NFA app I had to make an appointment, weeks out! I drove up to neighboring Madison County that day and practically had to wake the poor lady up

My NJ CCW just approved. Long road for sure. I have Florida,Utah and NH as well for reciprocity reasons. Since NJ will not recognize any other state, most states do not recognize NJ.

air travel with declared, secured and checked firearm isn’t all that complicated. i never fly in the continental usa without a handgun (except ma, ct, ri, ny and nj), even to california.
1. unload handgun, all mags or speedloaders.
2. place all ammo in factory ammo boxes.
3. place above items into a plastic handgun case with two locking points.
4. lock both locking points with non-tsa locks.
5. place double locked case inside a suitcase.
6. lock suitcase with a tsa lock.
7. arrive early at checkin and declare to airline staff.
8. politely follow airline staff instructions.
9. retrieve firearm suitcase from baggage service desk, not carousel, at destination.
10. keep up to date on, and heed, your airlines’ and destinations’ possession and carry rules for firearms.

if you recall your nervousness when you first went out in public with a lawful ccw, you will feel the same when flying the first time with a lawfully checked firearm. the second time you will silently laugh at being so nervous the first time.

jstert is right, I used to travel with firearms often and it wasn't a problem even 20 years ago. Know the rules, follow the rules, have a printed copy of the rules for the airline you're travelling because some of the employees may not know the rules. Only got hassled one time, many years ago, which isn't bad when you consider how many flights I took.

But anyway, yeah, given the lawmaking in DC just a few decades ago, I'm pleasantly surprised to see CCW issued. Doesn't affect me anymore, but still good to see.

Carry nail clipper because some baggage claims will zip tie your suitcase before giving it to you with a firearm inside.
