DC gun carry applications more than triple in wake of federal court ruling

Carry permit applications for Washington DC has tripled since the court ruling that said a part of the law was unconstitutional.

"Between January 1 and May 18, the city received 45 permit applications, according to Sean Conboy fo the Metropolitan Police Department. However, after Judge Frederick Scullin ruled that the “good reason” clause contained within the city’s carry law was unconstitutional on May 18, applications increased significantly. Between May 18 and June 26, the city received 140 applications, according to Conboy"
.

On Monday the U.S. Appeals Court issued a stay pending the District's appeal. That means the D.C. gov't can still deny permits based on a lack of "good reason." Those 140 people will likely never get their carry permit.

"Apparently there is legislation to make DC the 51st state, it will be called New Columbia."
Good luck with that. I'm sure Puerto Rico will be trading all their debt for statehood, also.

"Wonder how this could affect gun laws in DC/New Columbia if it becomes a state."
Seeing as they are presently allowed to more or less ruin themselves unfettered by Congress, probably not much.

DC may just sit on applications until this is settled, which could be a while. The appeals court has issued an accelerated briefing schedule for August, which is fast for the DC Circuit. The stay is for the PI Judge Scullin issued. It will still need to be litigated by the DCT AFAIK.

I do agree permits will not be approved during this period.

stand by.
