DC gun storage

I'm driving to DC next month for work. My company is paying for a hotel in the district for the week. I tried to get them to let me stay in VA but no joy. :banghead:

Do any gun shops in the area (Arlington, Alexandria, Springfield) have short term storage facilities? I'm going to have my Glock in the car on the drive up North. Period. Instead of breaking the law, I'd like to be able to lock up my pistol for the days I'm in DC, and pick it up when I come back to America.

I'm not aware of any easy dropoffs such as you describe, but there are lots of THR members in NoVA, and maybe one convenient enough to your planned travel who would be willing to secure your weapon for you. A word of caution: remember all the Federal property in the area (and there's a lot of it) is off-limits. That includes some highways even!

And guys, Yes, you would have to give it back!

In all honesty, for a week, I wouldn't bother to bring the gun. DC is the danger spot and that is definitely a place you don't want to get caught carrying. If you shoot a bad guy, you go to prison and he gets the mayor's good citizen award with the police saluting him.

For a longer term, I would open an account at a bank and get a safe deposit box. Of course, you would be subject to their hours as far as having access to the gun. Another idea is a plain old rental locker, but they usually want at least a month's lease, which is costly, and also have business hours.

Negative on lockers at the NRA, not sure about Blue Ridge. Have you considered asking one of the local shops to put it on their books for a few days and transfer it back on your way south? Fee should be nominal.
Gilberts Small Arms Range is a Hop, Skip and Jump off of I95 in Springfield. Try them at (703) 550-8005. Worst case you could leave it with their gunsmith (Tim Bacus) for a "checkout" or to have night sights installed.

I'm very interested to find out a bit more about the Gun situation in D.C. I'll be interviewing for a job there and would like to know how restrictive the laws are. From the sound of things, it looks like it's pretty bad, even compared to Los Angeles!

So what are the general laws specifically pertaining to D.C. on "assault weapons", handguns, shotguns, etc.? Are handguns in general illegal there???

gilbert's indoor range: http://www.gilbertindoorrange.com/ in rockville, MD does gun storage. it's maybe 30-40 min drive from downtown DC. there are prices on the membership page. it says they charge 10 per week. it a very nice range -- clean and modern. but, it is very expensive to shoot there.

Regarding the firearm laws inside the district of columbia, I'll just start with the bad news and continue,there ain't no good news regarding firearms in D.C.

All handguns are Illegal in D.C. All shotguns and rifles owned by residents of the District must be registered with the police. Barrels of shotguns & rifles must be at least 20 inches in length. Owning a class 3 firearm inside the district of columbia is against the law. Ownership of a military style rifle(ar-15) is against the law inside the district of columbia.

If you own ammo,it must be of a caliber for the shotgun/rifle you own. Owning pistol caliber ammo inside the district of columbia is against the law.

If you own anytype of pepperspray,etc,it must be registered with police.

I knew you had to disassemble long guns for storage, and handguns were banned, but I had no idea that you could not even have the ammo in DC!!! That is so crazy.

Arlington, VA is supposed to be pretty close right? I guess if I'm lucky enough to get this job, I'll probably live out there. First thing I'll do is buy a house and then an AR-15!!!!!!! No more FAB-10 B.S. for me!

Mark- Arlington is inside the beltway and a [relatively] easy commute into DC (esp. if you use Metro). Traffic really sucks, but you don't have far to go to get downtown. Be aware, though, that housing prices are genuinely silly and Arlington is a pretty liberal enclave. It is VA, though, and that's agood thing, as we have 'shall issue' CCW.

Yeah, I just took a look at housing prices out in Arlington. I don't know if Arlington is a good area or not, but it looks like they're all around 600K-1.5M +. How's Alexandria? Housing prices out there looked okay.

And yeah, if I were to go out there, I wouldn't know what to be more excited for....Shall Issue CCW or my first AR-15!!!!!

What real estate guide were you looking at? Most of Alexandria makes Arlington look like a bargin, and what doesn't is still a hugely overpriced toilet that you wouldn't want to live in.

my mother is a real estate agent -- the DC metro area is one of the most expensive places to live in the US. I think it is second only to San Francisco, NYC, and LA. and the property prices just keep going up.

Hi, The Eastern Panhandle of Wv seems to be the place for many DC commuters to reside . Taxes are realistic , housing costs are considerably cheaper than the District . Beltway Sucks tho pure and simple . Trains leave daily I believe from Martinsburg,Wv to DC . Better gun laws also here in WV . ..................WVleo

I took my NRA Basic Pistol course at Gilbert Indoor Range, it was a VERY nice facility and the staff was always professional and helpful. The target hangers were of the variaty where you punch in the distance you want it at (in feet) and the system runs your target out to the proper place, rather than the variaty where you just have "forward" and "back" switches. You have to buy and use their ammo (county commissioners made it part of their charter), so it does get a little expensive (everything is lead-free except .22lr).
