I have a Springfield Cal. .22 M1922M1 rifle serial #830X. The Springfield Research Service identified it as being sold from the Erie Reserve Ordnance Depot, Ohio to a civilian through the D.C.M. sales program on Sept. 28, 1927.
The barrel is marked SA 8-26. The bolt is marked with J5. The bolt is electro-engraved to match the serial number. The receiver and barrel are drilled and tapped, the receiver through the markings "M*ODEL" and "19*22".
The stock is like the Model 1922M1 (Issue) gallery practice rifle pictured on page 281 of Brophy's book. The "issue" rifle, however, was not drilled and tapped. The "NRA" or "sales" rifle, is without finger grooves, and is drilled and tapped.
Do you think I have a NRA rifle with an issue stock? Or could it be a issue rifle that was subsequently drilled and tapped? To make it more confusing, Herschel Garner, who posts on the on the M1903 Springfield forum on CSP Guntalk told me he had a SRS lettered rifle with a serial number close to mine in the same configuation.
