I recently purchased a DCM Match Bushmaster Rifle for CMP competition. I know very little about rifle shooting techniques and the equipment required. I have read the CMP rules but other than that, I know very little.

I am a fair pistol shooter but want to become triple distinguished eventually. Pistol, revolver and Rifle.

Searching the archives or the internet for "AR-15 marksmanship" nets me the same quantity of sites as searching for "used cars"

Would appreciate links to sites that have good basic information about the fundamentals of precision AR style rifle competition.

Thanks in advance.

the maryland HP site is well regarded.

as you probably already know, one of the premier CMP/HP vendors is based in New Albany, OH (about 5 doors down from where I used to live.) I'm sure they can hook you up with quality local instruction.

There are clubs in Zanesville and new philidelphia that shoot high power and offer new shooter clinics. These clinics are about the best thing I know of for the kind of training you're looking for.

The link posted above is a great starting point.

Look up Joe Yaw at the Zanesville club. He is an outstanding person and is a very good shooter. We went distinguished together in Florida.

Get this booklet from the CMP.

And this DVD set.

On my way

Ordered the book and DVD set. I have the same set for pistol, GOOD stuff.

I travel with my job and have not had a chance to get in any practice since purchasing the rifle. I have yet to foul the bore.

I figure eventually the snow will melt and summer will eventually get here.

At least I hope so. The place in New Albany would be Champion Shooter Supply? I always get the name mixed up with the place from TN.

I've picked up ammo from them in the past. Need to spend some time there and talk with them about competition. I've never been much of a rifle shooter. Mostly pistol. Different sport all together.
Thanks for the feedback.

I had learned quite a bit about proper shooting techniques at a CMP class at Zaneville a few years ago. The class I attended was taugh by Vince Jiga. An excellent course if you can find one. Another option is to attend an Appleseed event whenever they roll around near you. I hear you learn pretty much the same thing concerning riflemanship. (I plan on attending the one in Canton in June. There is one in Athens in May. )

The best Marksmanship training you can get!!!!!!!!!
Cheap also----- $70.00 for two days. $200 for a week long Riflemans Boot Camp. Active Military and kids FREE!
Shoots all over the country being put on.

Check around the site,be sure to click Appleseed and look at the drop down . Also register on the forum.

No doubt, Appleseed will give you the foundation that you need for competitive shooting and will do it in a hurry.

There is one in Canton/Minerva in June and Athens, OH in May.

Also, there are a couple in Indiana, Lexingtion, -just West of Madison and Freedom, Southwest of Indinapolis. Both of these are Special April 19th Presentations of the Appleseed shoot.

Wabash, IN will have one in June as well.

I can not recommend enough "Fred's Guide to Becoming a Rifleman", it breaks down the knowledge required to make an accurate shot out to 500 yards.

Feel free to PM me for more info on the Appleseed Shoots.

www.smartflix.com

You'll find several DVD's here for rent under the Firearm section.

They have the CMP DVD's for both pistol and rifle, but you can buy these from the CMP for a few more dollars. $25 vs $40.

CMP used to offer the Rifle course on a 3 VHS Tape set for $2.99 - $10 with shipping to your door.

ww.smartflix.com also has WWII training films for rent as well as a modern Marine training video.

The Marine training video is at:

You can downlload these WWII training films from

http://www.highpowerforum.com

This is sorta a new site. Not much going on theer it seems latley. But there is a very good section on positions, offhand, sitting and prone.

And you lucky dog, you live in Ohio. I have to a 2 1/2 day drive to Perry.

I would also recommend getting a RRA 2 stage trigger and put it in your rifle.

http://www.whiteoakprecision.com has tuned RRA 2 stage triggers for $120.00

Go to Zediker.com and buy these books:

The Competitive AR-15: The Mouse That Roared - By Glen Zediker
The High Power Rifle - By G. David Tubb

Read them both.

A good forum to look at is http://www.nationalmatch.us.

Book learning & forum browsing is a good starting point, but progressing in this sport is all about practice, practice and more practice. If this sport was easy, everyone would be a high-master!

A good next step is to find a club or range in your area that hosts NRA highpower matches. Attend a couple, watch and learn. Do not be afraid to ask questions. HP shooters are a friendly bunch and are usually willing to help out where they can. You may be able to hook up with a mentor that will show you the ropes.
