my dad wasnt much of a handgunner so i got him a hi point 9mm to learn on,i know,i know but it was in our budget at the time, plus my brother has the .45 and its been a trooper, anyway my dad had a friend offer him a s/w model 10 .38,nice blueing, with two sets of grips for the 9mm,i told him to not trip while he runs to get the hi point,i thought he did fine.i likes/w autos.

I found the C9 a little difficult to learn on, as the slide is heavy and recoil seems high for a 9mm... I have since gotten much better with it, but I think it has more noticable recoil then my .357 revolver.

Good gun, but maybe difficult to learn on.

Your dad traded up in my opinion. Any time you can trade a depreciating asset for an appreciating asset, you're doing well.
He now has himself a piece of history.

...

yeah i went on gunbroker and liked to choked, what people are bidding on model 10 and 10-3"s,i remember when the shotgun news sold em for 179.00,i figure we had 140.00 in the c9 and he let 2 100 pack wally world 9mm boxes go and got 27 old hollowpoints back with the revolver.so 40.00 worth ammo basically give or take.ive had a craven for a taurus revolver in .38 i found for 175.00.i had a model 83,was a good shooter.

A clean model 10 is high on my own shopping list. They are truly a delight to shoot and deadly accurate. The very first cylinder of .38Spl I shot from one in a semi casual manner grouped tighter than I can manage with my 9mm semi when I'm really concentrating.

I think your dad traded up big time.

.....

yeah had a few people rag on me about those hi points,my brothers .45 is fun to shoot, but im tickled my dad got what he wanted in the smith.i like my smith auto"s.

My "dear old dad" is no firearm aficianado and relies on a Hi-Point to protect the homestead. I think he is well served.

Does he shoot it much?

No- he is 89 years old, lives with my mother in a bad neck of the woods and has never been "into" guns. He bought the HiPoint on his own (without consulting me-not that I necessarily would have advised him any differently) and I have test-fired the gun for reliability. Not only does the gun shoot fine (albeit with the handling characteristics of a Black&Decker rechargeable drill) but my dad shoots it passably well.
Hopefully, he'll never have to use it but should that time come I believe his HiPoint will be up to the job. If I didn't think so I would have gotten him something that is. I did get him a 12 gauge pump shotgun that stands ready inside their bedroom closet.
