The other day I broke the decapping pin on my RCBS .223 die, so I called them and they said they would send me a few. In the pic is what they sent me in the plastic bag. My question is does what I have come to refer to as the "decapping pin" come apart to allow replacement of the actual part they sent me? Or did they send me the wrong thing?

Yes, it comes apart.

The expander on the end of the expander rod is threaded on and clamps the pin inside the rod.

Unscrew it and replace the pin.

The bottom part of that twists off and allows you to take out the old decapping pin.

RC beat me to it.

Was afraid that was the case. That thing is gonna be a bear to get off

Yeah I need another pair of pliers to hold the other piece with. That sucker is on there good. I'll take it to work tomorrow and do it in the shop

How lucky can a guy get! I've never broke one in over 30 yrs. of reloading, seriously. And the odd thing about it is, that literally everyone I know has broke them at one time or another, no fault of their own, beyond not catching the sudden stop or odd feeling I suppose.

But ya, just unscrew it and replace with the new one.

No it isn't.

Grab it with a pair of pliers and unscrew it.

I would soak it in some Kroil or other good penetrating oil for a few ours. If you don't wrap that expander with a thick cloth or put it in some aluminum or padded vice jaws, you will mare it up.

Then it will mare up all of the inside of your case necks. Best bet would have been to order a new expander button with the pins just in case you do damage the expander.

I have wrapped them with cloth and still screwed them up because they were so tight.

Good luck with it!

Something to consider, depending on how much you load and what you load. RCBS pins come in two sizes, Large and Small. You may in the future want to add some Large to the additional Small you now have. Sitting dead in the water for want of a simple pin is like the proverbial kingdom that was lost for want of a horseshoe nail. :)

"...mare it up..." What?
"...gonna be a bear to get off..." It shouldn't be on very tight. Nuclear powered tools aren't required. Hand tight is enough. And the manufacturers don't use the nuke powered tools like the car makers do.

Talk about much ado about nothing. Unscrew the expander . Put the new pin in. Screw it back on and get on with it. It ain't that hard!

Well my troubles are over and I wanted to backfill a little info. I'm currently renting and have no workshop, such as would have a vice. The only gripping tool I had at the house was one pair of vice grips. So I had to take it to the shop where I work and put it in the vice, after which it came apart rather easily.
