I was running some .45 brass through a Dillon universal decapping die today, and a few cases had the primer cap pop off, but the cup stayed in the primer pocket.

Will these pop out with a primer pocket cleaning tool, or are those cases bound for the scrap bin?

Thanks!

A primer is made of a cup (shaped like a cup), and an anvil (shaped like a bipod or tripod). It sounds like the primer cup is separating at the corner, leaving the cup wall in the pocket.

If so, it's likely more work than worth to remove them.

Sounds like corrosion locked the primers in place. I had that happen to me with brass that's been laying out in the rain and snow for many months.

I have a mini screwdriver set I got from Radio Shack back in the 70's. One of them is a sharp pointed awl. I wiggle it inbetween the primer band that is left behind and the side of the pocket. Then I use it as a lever and pull the handle to the edge of the brass. It will colapse the ring and it will fall out when tipped. Your call if it is worth saving them or not. If I am low on brass or have nothing else to do I will pick the rims out.

This works but I generally just trash them. If you have the patience you can try and pry them out.
