Well the first weekend of the Early Muzzle Loader Hunt in Maryland is done, and although I saw lots of deer..., none presented a shot. icon_eek.gif

On day one, last Thursday, some leisure riders were across the roadway on the horse-boarding farm, yakety yakety yak they made a lot of noise as they rode and yelled their conversation at each other..., even at a distance I could hear them..., which in the past has flushed deer across the road toward me, but not that day. Hours after the riders had gone, I could see at a distance there was a large group of doe across the roadway ..., can't shoot across a road even if I'd been close enough, AND the land they were on, as I mentioned, is a horse breeder, stabler, and riding school, so they don't want hunters on that property. I can't blame them really. I don't think they mind the hunters, but it's a business and the sheeple that board their horses and take lessons probably would freak if a hunter was seen on that property.

Friday a pair of doe came in pretty close but didn't clear enough of the trees to give me a shot. :( There was deer scat in several places on the property, and I'd seen doe moving in to bed down earlier in the week, so figured right that deer would come in as the sun set. They meandered about and then changed their minds though the wind was from them to me.

Saturday a large group of doe were paralleling the property line on the wrong side of the fence to the East of me. Then on my way off the property two doe had bedded down near long drive that leads to the entrance to the property, ...,

Sunday I had family stuff to do, and yesterday, Monday, it was doe only (The first three days of Early ML Season it's either sex, the season stays open to the following Saturday but it's doe-only) and a nice big buck, right after sunrise came striding across the open field to the South of me..., he was 30 yards away and I swear he looked at me and WINKED!

Ah well..., saw a plethora of squirrel, and at least I know the deer are out there. ;)

I can relate to your situation..... Sometimes it's like THEY KNOW when you can't shoot'em. Talk about a definition of frustration.........

Happend to me Moose hunting this Fall, I know how you feel.......

I missed out on getting my ''meat' Moose tag this year (my mistake, entirely) one that allows any antlers/cow with no calf, and a longer season, so meat hunting dosent interfere with the trophy hunters . In my carelessness I went and got a ''Sport'' tag, and thats a short and sweet season in 20 days of Sept.

The wife and I Moose hunted for a couple days this summer. Had to find a Bull with 50+ width or a 4 point brow.
We drive a boat as I live on a river delta that has 15 major channels, 78 sloughs and smaller channels and hundreds of lakes, basicly 65% water in coverage. Moose abound, and we have no shortage of them, but dang, come ''hunting season'' the big guys just stood back inthe willows and laughed at us....

Saw 39 Moose, (we count 'em) through binocs and up close, Young Bulls Cows without calfs, Cows with calves, and not one big Bul that would be a ''definit'' .......there were a couple ''Hmmmm...maybe''..... but we didnt want to take a chance.........later , we went home for more gas and a a new plan LOL!!

Then Caribou arrived and we forgot about Moose......LOL!

I spent all day with my smokepole and passed up 4 shots. One was the biggest buck that I have ever passed on. There are two bigger ones and I am holding out for one of them. A bambi, a nubbin buck and a doe posed for me . The doe was in the pasture with some high dollar cows. Don't need to buy a registered Charolais. Counting the deer that were along the road I saw 24 today. I'll be back tomorrow.

Don't need to buy a registered Charolais
I KNOW, RIGHT? :what:

To the East of me, is a horse boarding business, coupled with a Christmas Tree farm...., I don't need to drill a person's registered Dressage Gelding, or Fox Hunting Jumper, or later in the year tag some dude in the forehead while he's lying under one of the evergreens with a saw and I didn't see him beyond the deer when I took my shot...,

S'why it's called hunting and not deer shooting. Knew a guy who hit a deer in what would be considered downtown Mississauga(Suburb of Toronto). You get to keep any deer you hit with a vehicle here as long as you report the incident to the MNR(required by insurance anyway). All his buddies were whining about how they spent hundreds of dollars on deer hunting and he gets one with a car. The car was a borrowed BMW too. Windshield was smashed in.

That's called "Deer Cruising"
Back in the 1980's in Wisconsin, I saw a beat up old station wagon running across an open field after a couple of deer. I asked my buddy (who was with me in my car and watching the spectacle unfold as we drove along a country road), what that was about, and he explained that they had changed the law and if you hit a deer with a car, even if you had filled your previous deer tags, you could keep the one you hit. Apparently the way the law was worded they didn't mention the car being on the roadway when it struck the deer, nor did it mention it being an accident instead of intentional. I think the law has been changed since then.
