Deer season runs out Saturday after next . I heard my dogs barking , a sign that dogs are running through my property , so I went out and could hear some hounds running . I walked to them and was lucky enough that the deer turned and ran to me . The hunt club had the road lined up with trucks waiting for the deer to cross , but he came to me and I killed it over their dogs . My first deer of the season ? They could have just as easily shot me , shooting into my property the way my country allows them to hunt . I was happy that I shot it over there dogs on my property . 07E96147-756A-4E8D-992E-965FE266C727.jpeg

He was running and I am in a shotgun county . The first shot broke both of his front legs .
Sound like a lucky day all around.

I'll bet there were some unhappy houndsmen though!

Oh for sure. I would have loved to be a fly in one of those trucks on the road.

Over the years I have shot deer when others made a drive in an area I was already at. Had them come over and want me to give them the deer. Have shot coyotes when small game hunting in front of hounds on public land. Dog owners feel the need to come over and chew my face off. Again....I was there first.

Two of the guys were real nice . Several of the others had a sour look on their face . I told them that I feel bad shooting deer in front of your dogs , but they are on my property . I also told them that I don’t go on the state property y’all hunt until after deer season . I am worried that they are going to shoot into my property the way they hunt . In my county you can hunt in the ditch , but it is unlawful to shoot across the road , or into private property . They had the road lined up with trucks looking into my property . I am sure once it would have got to my ditch , they would have started shooting , across the road and into my property . The ditch and the road is the only place that they would be able to see it and get a shot . The state woods behind them is to thick to see them . I told them not to be shooting into my property because I could be over there and I do follow their dogs when I hear them on my property . They asked me if they could hunt my property . I told them that they could when I am hunting with them and it won’t be everyday . Only 8 more hunting days left in the season . I am glad when firearms season is over .

How can one get upset at someone who is hunting their own property. Glad you got your buck. The whole hound hunting deer is totally foreign to me as a westerner. Now we will hound hunt bear and mountain lions, but not deer.

Basically the same thing dogs running deer . I don’t have a problem with dog hunting , just how they let them hunt with dogs in my county . IMO , they should have to be off the road 30 yards . Many counties in my state have a law about how far you have to be off the road . My neighboring county , it’s 100 yards .

If the population are of a size that needs to be controlled by any means necessary than I don't have a problem with it either from and ethical standpoint. It's just foreign to me is all.

It would make me not want to be anywhere near that type of hunting though. Seems like a good way for a bystander to get shot.

In these dog running zones is it short range firearms only? Or are people able to use high powered rifles?

My county is shotgun only for deer during the firearms season . Many counties in Virginia are shotgun only . In counties that allow rifles , you can still use dogs . West of the Blue Ridge they don’t allow dog hunting for deer and they only have about a 2 week season .

A lot of bear hunters I know who use dogs WANT you to shoot the bear their dogs are running. It means the dogs get a rest but also a taste of success, and more importantly they don’t have to punch their tag ending the season.
That’s not universal, but I’ve seen it happen often. I have no experience with deer and dogs. I could see it working the same way though.

Here they're happy if you shoot the coyote. They still get to claim a coyote killed from in front of their dogs.
I don't understand some people's thought process.
If someone wounds an animal and tracks it to where I shot it. I'll happily give it to them. I'm not much on my animals looking like Swiss cheese.
At the same time if I track a wounded animal to where someone risk shot it. I'm not going to try to get them to give it to me.

OP made a good kill. I'm happy for him.

Good kill, OP. You did just fine. They didn’t get him. He crossed onto your property. You nailed him. Nothing wrong with that.
