Hi , my perimeter's house is rounded by reinforced brick walls:banghead:. I can buy a gun nearly but I need help, because I didn't decide which I will choose.:barf:
The options are: a Colt 1911 45 ACP, a Taurus 66 4 inches barrel 357 Mag:what: or a Maverick 12GA shotgun, 20 inches barrel, loaded with 00 buckshot or federal 7,5 shot.
I will buy the three guns in a future but I have to choose only one for now, because there is a high insecurity wave here. I know guns and shooted most of them, but I have to decide.:uhoh:

Which will your chice?:D

thanks.

It all comes down to what you shoot best, honestly. Though I love 1911s (I do own one), I prefer my S&W 686 4" 357 Mag for home protection as there is no safety to manipulate and the trigger has a long/heavy enough pull that I am more comfortable leaving it loaded up than I would be if it were a Glock with it's uber light pull. You gotta want to pull that DA revolver trigger. I had a Springfield XD for a time, and was never comfortable leaving it at bedside with a round in the chamber.

I will say that IMHO, it is nice to have both a handgun and a long arm for home defense duty. In an emergency, I can grab my 686 off the floor much more rapidly than I could get a shotgun to the ready.

On the other hand, a shotgun is without a doubt a much more effective defensive arm than a handgun, and I will be adding one to my small, humble arsenal in the coming days.

So I guess my answer is get the shottie and a handgun (357 would be my preference). You just have to decide which to get first.

BTW, if things are getting bad enough in your area, at least consider hiring a real estate agent too. Trouble can find anyone anywhere anytime ... but I try to avoid the higher threat areas as much as possible. And that includes where I live.

Well,

If it was me I would choice the 1911, but I say again that is me. If you have shot all three then the best person to decide is you.

I agree that in an untrained hand, the shotgun is an excellent defense weapon. It is just up to you how comfortable you feel with both.

But I agree get the 1911 and the shottie.

Shotgun first, for sure. The folks saying "buy the handgun" are not taking into account most peoples less than perfect handgun technique. The shotgun will be far easier to actually score a hit with and it doubles as a door breacher.:D

Will you practice? If so, which will you practice with?

The mavrick is the best choice if you can go out and shoot it fairly often. Go out with friends or family and shoot flying clay targets for fun. That would be great. If you can't shoot (no open spaces, no clubs, nobody to go with you) it isn't good. Most outdoor shooting ranges have places to shoot shotguns.

The 1911 would be OK if you will go to indoor shooting range a lot. Indoor ranges allow you to practice with handgun easily. Indoor ranges are mostly in cities. You can practice outdoors too but if there is an outdoor range the shotgun would be better.

The Taurus is best if you can't go to any range. If you aren't able to leave the house often, or money is a problem, you can buy primers (about $25 for 1000 around here) and plastic practice bullets/cases (speer and others sell them... you can also use wax bullets, another $25 for enough to use up those 1000 primers) and set up a little target range in your house using a cardboard box and some innertube rubber. That works perfectly with revolvers (can be done with 1911 but not easy) and is a great way to learn at home. It may be too loud if your neighbors are close but you can try it and see. If your house has a basement go down there and nobody will notice. You still need to go to a range and fire real bullets sometimes. Once or twice a year is fine.

Shotgun first, easiest gun to shoot accurately and 00 buck is devastating compared to any pistol ammunition whatever the caliber. I strongly suggest that you use only buckshot and not birdshot for self-defense.

After that, I'd get the M1911.

Buy all three.

I carry a 1911 IWB around the house, but a shotgun is within easy reach. I stash a .357 revolver in my bedroom where I can grab it from my bed.

If I answer the door and something goes bad, I have my 1911 on me. If it goes really bad and I have to retreat inside, I can grab the shotgun. If someone breaks in my house in the middle of the night, I have the revolver.

Since the 1911 conceals the best, get that one first. If something odd is going on or you answer the door at night, you can have it on you without showing a gun (get an IWB holster for it, so you can hide it under your shirt).

I would have to go with the shotgun. You just can't beat it. It works well for men or women and the sound when racking a round is enough to clear a house most times by itself.

Yeah, don't count on that. The shotgun is a fine choice, but the first sound any invader is going to hear from me is "boom". If possible, I will yell a warning to get out immediately or be fired upon, but that warning will be yelled with a round in the chamber and the firearm aimed at center mass. I am not trying to sound tough or bloodthirsty by saying that, as much as I am just saying that I want them out of my perimeter right freaking now, and I am not going to gamble that racking the slide is going to do it.

For the record, my bedstand guns are a S&W 66-1 .357 revolver and an AR.

Do you mind if I ask where you are?

My vote, by the way, is the .357, then the shotgun. I find it a lot easier to do things like open doors and carry kids when I have a handgun, whereas a shotgun requires two hands.

You asked for one to start with..I have both 357 and Maverick 88..out of a dead sleep I have both in my bedroom but my 357 is 2 feet away from aim and fire if my life is at stake. The shot gun I have to fumble around in the dark. The revolver is point and fire. Hopefully I don't have to but I gotta go with the revolver. Good luck.
