What is the ultimate defensive shotgun combo and how can you deside. I mean look at all the options 12ga, 20ga, pump, and auto not to mention the diffrent types of stocks you can use and barrel lengths.
For me its a Mossberg 500 12ga pump with 181/2 in barrel 9 shot tubular magazine loaded with 00 buck and a pistol grip only. Now im sure someone out there is going pistol grip only an 00 buck is he crazy. Maybe a little J/K but for me that is my set up and with a little practice shooting 00 buck with a pistol grip is not that uncomfortable. Or maybe im just used to it by now it is pretty much all I shoot.I do however also have a Mossbereg 500 20ga pump that I keep loaded with slugs and the original buttstock that I would use if my 12ga wasnt working.
But this discussion isnt about me. I wont to know what all of you think about shotguns for defense , if you would use them or not, what ur set up is, all off that who know maybe we can all put our heads together and come up with the ultimate defensive shotgun combo.

Depends on what situation you are prepping for.
Me, I don't expect to need 9 shots to handle one or two burglers.:p

Are you prepping your house?
are you prepping a business?
where do you live?
what's the threat?

are you preparing for zombies?
do you have backups available?

The situation requires more information.

I have an 12 ga 870 Police 20" cylinder bore in the bedroom closet. Two No.4 buckshot shells live in the magazine with three on the shelf above it and 5 in the butt cuff. I have another barrel to use for hunting. This gun plus the .45ACP revolver and Maglight in the nightstand works for me for home defense.

Moving outside of the house, with the bead front sight and no rear, I can keep slugs on a mansized target at about 75 yards with about 50% at 100. Adding a deer barrel with rifle sights would make it a 100 yard gun with slugs.

Moving up to the "ultimate combo," IMHO the 870 a la Wilson would be an example. However they are VERY expensive for what you get. There is another thread on this issue in this forum. If I wanted to go ultimate, I would take an 870 Police and add a mag extension, ghostring sights, sling swivels and flashlight forend, then perhaps look around at weather resistant finishes.

Although not as handy as a pistol, I would pick a short shotgun for home defense because of the power, intimidation factor and the relatively short danger space. I live in a city.

I have a 1300 12 in my closet, with 7 rounds of light 2 3/4" birdshot. I have 3 kids not placed very strategically in my house. Overpenatration is my biggest concern.

Hopefully, I'll never need to worry................

I use a Browning BPS with a 22" barrel, ghost ring sights, and load my own rounds. I use around 36 grains of blue dot, and T-shot. Outta do the trick. I also have a .45 Sig in the nightstand, with the clip in the gun loaded with alternating Federal Hydrashok JHP and full metal jackets. The other clip is all FMJ. :what:

Mindset, training, and whatever the Defensive Shotgun Instructor such as Awerbuck, Cain and others have assited with finding for YOU , in a shotgun that fits YOU for the environment YOU will be needing a defensive shotgun for.

I know folks with 12 and 20 gauges, pumps and semis, wood and synthetic stocks, with/without mag extensions, side saddles and lights on forends.

Lots of folks using a bone stock shotgun with regular 26" or longer barrels as well.

Handy for me is NEF Youth 20 ga single shot, with a Koplin elastic cuff and extra rounds.

There are NO Ultimate Combinations.

There is NO Holy Grail in Firearms or Ammo.

Mindset, Training, Willingness to learn - Willingness to Survive are more important Combinations.

Me I prepare for a perp holding my wife or other family members hostage. When I use my 'engageing talk' to get a head out a little I want a nice .73 " slug fired from a well proven sight picture with a low bore to sight height like my 870 has (instead of that little .22 bullet out of an AR-15)to instantly end the motor impulses of said late perp out to about 50 feet or less. Makes you think about them pistol grips, buckshot, birdshot and primative sights.

What ever is at hand I like. I'll learn to use it in a heartbeat (sorry the Marine is peeking through). Given a choice though, Mossy 590 or an 870 (in that order) how they come from the factory.

Tell you what though, the M1014 is a helluva gun. Fast and accurate and, not to mention, out of my price range :D

defense shotgun, what i have..

i had bought a Mossy 20 ga with the 28" ribbed barrel for hunting. after i got ahold of the mossy catalouge i found out that there was an 18" Persuader barrel so i sent for it.

i love having one gun for two functions. i use the winchester 000 buck and size #2 shotshells for in the house. no slugs in the house, dont want over penetration.

BozemanMT to answer your question...

Ok lets say that you live out in the wilderness but not too far about only half an hour to an hour outside the city.
Now lets say there has been a city wide blackout and mobs of people have started rioting. No gas, no food, water, no nothing because the blackout has been going on for lets say 3 weeks with no signs of it getting better.
Now of course your not prepping for zombies but you have heard on the one radio station still working that the mob of angry rioters are heading your way. Lets also say that most of the rioters are strung out on pcp or some other drug take your pick.
Ok you do have a back up but its only a handgun with very limited ammo and a rifle but its only a 22lr well say for fun. Ok theres the million dollar question what would you do then? What defensive shotgun combo would you pick then? Hope that can clarify a few things and answer your questions.

ultimate combo???
well there are diffrent combos for diffrent situations and while one will work if pressed i am afraid to say there just isnt one combo for all situations. so the best advice i can give is find what works best for you in the perceved situation or the widest range and go with that.
for me i use a mossburg 590 with a sidesaddle and a fiberoptic front sight nothing to fancy that can go wrong or distract me at the wrong instant. no battery needed for the red dot or laser though i will admit i am thinking of ghost rings for it but that will be down the road. i mean who am i trying to impress? the junkie who just broke in at 2 am looking for money for his next fix? the only impression i want to make on him is to impress his ass right back out and into a body bag if i am forced to pull the trigger. or the buck in my sights the only thing i want to impress him into is my freezer. well thats just my thoughts.
