I have a friend that has a Colt Lawman MK III 2" .357 and a Colt 3" Detective Special both revolvers are minty and both of these are on my all time "want list". I have been bugging him for a while to sell them to me as he never shoots them. He informed me today that he would sell me one and only one but I need to choose.

Help me choose please.

Your intended use should be the foremost factor in making a choice, but be aware that Detective Special's with 3" barrels are scarce, if not rare. The revolver itself has a cult following that the Lawman Mk. III doesn't - at least so far. That said, it's an excellent revolver, but a bit large for its intended purpose. An extra inch of barrel would have made it much better.

I'd go with the DS; while I'm fond of the Mk.III series, there's just something about the DS that make it "special". And this is made even more special with that 3" barrel; introduced in the early '70's, not that many were made, making it all the more collectable as well.

A three-inch DS is not nearly as common as a Lawman MKIII.

Of course, if you can, get both. ;)

While perhaps objectively not the most practical gun around, I've always liked the looks of the two-inch Lawman. It looks as if it has a pugnacious "attitude."

Thanks guys, the DS was the way I was leaning myself. I'll try to pry the MK III from him later.
