I just moved to Colorado (close to Boulder). Where would be a good place to take a class to satisfy CO's requirement? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I signed my wife up at http://dfuse.us/

The written portion of the course is a home study program which is nice for busy folks. The shooting portion sounds pretty intense as well.

+100 on Ray Sanchez
My wife and I took his class and it was worth double what he charged (which wasn't all that much)
Personalized class lots of real world range exercises.
Best class I've had in a LONG time.
Also, he's Utah certified too, so you can get a Utah non-resident permit.

Certainly no dearth of places to get training.

Larry Johnson has a store front on Parker Road in Denver for On Target. Much, much more than is required for a CCW but closer to what you need to know to not just carry but also to use what you carry. Larry Johnson is a former SWAT trainer.

I'll say the same for George Wright at Centennial Defense Academy. www.guntraining.biz. He teaches the basics and then he teaches you more. He teaches in the style of Gabe Suarez and hosts Gabe Suarez for lectures to this area.

I've had one "basic" course of 4 hours from one local instructor. I could take that in and use it for my CCW but when I strap on I want to be better prepared. I've not had a chance due to family/work to take classes from either Larry Johnson or George Wright but I'll tell you right now that I want to train with both of them.

I believe in loading my high capacity magazines and that goes double for the one I carry between my ears.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I went to the County Sheriff's Office today to submit my application. I was told it'll probably be around 6-8 weeks to get in the mail.

Where are some good indoor handgun and outdoor rifle ranges? I was surprised to find there isn't much listed in the phonebook. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but there seemed to be more ranges in the anti-gun Chicago-area (where I moved from).

check the link in my signature for some indoor ranges. I have all of the local ones listed other than one or two new ones that may have sprung up over the last year or two.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. mr_dove, great website you have there. great resource. being in boulder county, i'm sort of interested in learning more about the different ranges north of the area as well. after reading your review on your site, i checked out jensen's in loveland. not a bad place. decent service from everyone but the youngest clerk present, the few times i went. anyhow, hope to find a nice pistol range north of the area too. i don't do too well sitting in traffic anymore. :)

Yes, I wish i could provide more information about shooting in Boulder. Most of the action is in Denver and Colorado Springs. I think Left Hand Canyon might still be open. Its a national forest shooting area a few miles north of boulder. It has always been a troubled area though because the shooting area is shared with off-roaders.

As far as I know, you've got it completely covered on your web site, between the public land listings, and the Boulder Rifle Club. Any other shooting going on is happening on private land. Left Hand was still open, as of a few weeks ago, but as poor a place to shoot as ever. The CO-AR15.com crew uses the area mr_dove lists at Highways 7 & 72 on a regular basis. (they do group shoots there, every other month.)

When land is a bazillon dollars an acre in Boulder county, running a big old range is not the best use of your land.
Which is why they are mostly all gone.
I live in Longmont and shoot pistols and rifles out at Weld County Range (by Ault, a good hour away) or shotguns all around (all about an hour away)
Too many people
too many golf courses
Not enough shooting ranges.

Training

New training of all types at 303arms (303arms.com) pistol, rifle, and precision. they also open their training area up as a general purpose range for people to practice draws, malfunctions, moving and shooting, speed shooting etc..

I have taken two courses with Larry Johnson from On Target. I highly recommend him. These were given at a location outside of Parker. I don't know if he still does them there or not.

Larry is a long time LEO, Police Chief and firearms instructor, and a good guy. He knows his stuff.

The best range near Boulder that you can join is Triggertime Gun Club. http://www.triggertimegunclub.com/
Clean, safe, experienced staff, gun smith on the premises, Rifle and Pistol lanes; you can't go wrong.

As to shooting places, I might be able to slip some of you in at my gun club over at Idaho Springs. PM me and we will talk.Guests are allowed.
