Just wondering if deploying the blade quickly can drastically incur wear on a folding knife as opposed to a controlled slow opening. I know the autos and the assisted openers come out pretty fast, but wondering if inherent in their lock system is a preventative measure?

Do lockbacks have this as a problem? Liner Locks? Axis locks? and so on...

Sure, it places much more stress on the mechanism of a knife, especially the blade stop.

Unless you just sit around snapping your knife open and closed this isn't much of a concern with any good quality folder.

I have to admit Sam, I have opened and closed my folder many times for extended periods of time (Maybe 100 times in the course of a day, its like my big boy rattle). Are there others who will "play" with their knives in a like manner?

Nope

The only componets in autos and assisted openers that are subject to fatigue/failure are the springs themselves.

As to whether there's greater wear on opening slowly manually and "flinging" the blade open...not on a knife of reasonable quality. Most even moderate quality mass manufactured folders are designed for being flung open these days because so many people do just that.

Don't get too excited.

Remember my caveat, "a knife of reasonable quality", applies.

Even Spydercos were intended to be flung open (just hold the blade and fling the handle away).
