As not to add to the peeing contest, maybe our thread starter should go to the local shops, ranges, and gun clubs and try a few different models and see what feels right for him and fits his needs.
We can recommend till the cows come home and it won't do a bit of good without him trying these guns out himself. Recommendations can be made, but these are all subjective.
In order to help our requestor out it may be advisable to back up the good reasons for a pick with sound reasoning.
There are a lot of choices
As has been stated by others, Ruger, Taurus, Rossi, Kel-tec, and others can be had for those on a budget. In the real world one loses nothing by taking a gander at any of the makes and models.
Do own Ruger and Taurus handguns. All are still giving sterling service.
All the above mentioned brands all have forums dedicated to these. Why not ask and research at each and see what pops up at you?
