Went to look around at American Derringer website. Under "New Products" they list a Black Powder derringer. However, the link doesn't work. Maybe it's still in planning stages?

In any case it would be nice to have a Remington style double barrel Over-Under muzzleloader available on the market. I would probably buy one. Especially with 209 ignition. And with .454 rifled bore.

I'll email American Derringer to inquire.

you're right that would be cool.Dixie Gunworks has a .36 ''Twister'' by classic Arms, that's kinda sorta close, but uses a different mechanisim.of course you could do as I have done and just load your cartridge derringer's cartridges with black powder.

Let us know if you get a reply. I'm under the impression that American Derringer went out of business several years ago. I have one in .38 Special I purchased in about 1996 that is a nice little gun.

Their email address didn't work. I will call them Monday.

As far as I know they are very much in business.

I the meantime, I might try to build one myself. Never built a gun before, but there's a first time for everything. I'm thinking along the lines of O/U in .45 with percussion cap ignition (or maybe 209) single action with two hammers and two triggers. This would be an inline.

It's just an idea for now, but will try to implement it.

A local gunsmith built it for himself.
I had similar idea like batjka has and contacted him with a custom build order. Instead of building a new one he offered this one for sale. It must be hell a lot of work to mill and file the frame from a block of C45 steel.
Barell is .45 rifled. Inside and outside it is replicating the O/U derringer with its SA ratchet switching hammer. Springs are coil springs. Biggest load i tried was 30gr of bp and .440 ball and due to the short barell it was a real ear ringger even with my normal protection. Engraving is not really my thing but i did not refuse his offer just because of that. :)

That's a gorgeous piece and one to be vey proud of. The engraving and wood decor almost makes it. Congrats on a nice piece !!

Iskra,

That is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship! Does your gunsmith friend have any more for sale?

What is the barrel length? I'm thinking if it's too short the velocity will be adversly affected. Although the Box O' Truth test on the Philadelphia derringer with a 3" barrel showed a load of 40 gr penetrating as much as a full-size pistol with the same load. This BP is a funny stuff!

I have had an American Derringer Model 1 in 45/410 for close to 20 years now. Been shooting 45LCs loaded with black powder just about as long as I have had the gun. Its a fun gun to shoot. Lots of bang and smoke.

Barrel length is exactly 3". I think 40gr powder charge wouldn't be a problem as smith had tested the gun with fully loaded barrels. I have no access to chrono but someday would be interesting to replicate that water jug penetration test.

I'm only aware of another one of his derringer, sold out with the rest of his collection.

Business was interesting with him. He, like a real 'not yet understood' artist created his fantasy guns and tried to sell them with not too much success. Lost talent on our small Hungarian market.

Iskra,

By all means please try the water jug penetration test. I am very interested in the results.
That gunsmith does great work. So he's out of business? Should have moved to the States and done his work here. I'm sure plenty of people would buy his creations.

Welcome aboard, BTW.
