I was at a major sporting goods store over the weekend. They had a Desert Eagle in 50AE on display. It is an awesome looking firearm.

Many years ago there was a guy shooting one at the range I was at. He asked me if I wanted to fire a few rounds through it. I did. It had the strangest recoil. Not only did the gun go up, it had a twist to it too. I was told it has to do with the rotating bolt.

My wife was standing right behind when I was shooting the gun. She swears she felt a shock wave hit her everytime I pulled the trigger.

I don't know if I'll ever one. But, does anyone here own one? What do you use it for? Do you use it for CCW?:D

I have one and it's everything you've said, IMHO. Mine is mostly a range toy although I've taken it in my deer stand one year. Compared to other big caliber handguns it's a pleasure to shoot with the gas recoil and weight of the pistol. It's not something I would consider for CCW. I have packed it while hiking just for fun though.

It's one of my favorite pistols.

I use mine for hunting and recreational plinking......it's never been considered a CCW because of the size, however Hollywood has often portrayed it as such.

I got one to help my brother out of financial dificulty (I bought his). I never planned on getting one, but I think it's kinda cool to have. Anyway, I don't think I would trust it for any sort of defense situation just yet (it still has some breaking-in to do), but I will tell you that in my limited experience with it, you need to run it wet and shoot hot ammo (HP's and SJSP's only) for it to be reliable. Basically, I would consider it as one hell of an expensive fun toy. Maybe after I put more rounds through it (consecutive, trouble-free rounds, that is), I may feel more comfortable with it being used in anti-big animal defense situations (of which my city dwelling self will never face!).

I'm glad I have it, but to tell you the truth I am looking at some rather nice 10mm 1911's I would kinda rather have. But I will not sell the DE to get one.

it had a twist to it too. I was told it has to do with the rotating bolt.
I feel the twist. Maybe it's the bolt, but I doubt it as the bolt starts rotating and stops rotating. I thought it the rifling putting 1:19 twist on a 350 grain bullet--bullet spins right, gun twists left.
What do you use it for?
Fun at the range with friends. Teaching gun safety--gets students focused. Might hunt with it eventually.

Had a guy in my squad at Saturday's match shooting one in .44. He was in the concealed division, and using an IWB holster a friend of mine (also at the match) made for him.

Lots of FTE issues, even sopping wet, but the gun is an old one and needs some overhauling. Which is the reason why he won't currently carry it, but he has in the past. FYI, he's a pretty large dude, with easily 6 inches and more than a couple pounds on me (6'1", 215).
