Never gotten the idea of using a pistol over a carbine when it comes to hunting so I still see it as pointless.

Just because you see it that way doesn't mean it is. Handgun hunting is a different challenge, falling between archery and rifle. It's fairly popular, and the purpose of the DE, S&W 500 and others is that you're actually using a handgun, not a cut down rifle, like the Thompson Contender or XP-100.
