Where can I find desiccant packets (silica gel) for keeping my gun safe and ammunition boxes moisture free, without having to order online? What stores would carry them?

Ask at Walgreen's I used to work in the pharmacy during the winter when construction was slow. Anyway many of the drug come packaged with large packets of silica desicant. They just throw them away ask and they may give them to you. Some of the packs were around 4x6" a inch thick.

Camera stores, electronics stores like Fry's if you have one nearby, also home stores like Bed Bath Beyond all sell desiccants.

I got all mine from a shoe store, every box comes with one and they just throw them out.

I will second the cat litter. I make my own with the crystal cat litter (100% silica gel) and my food saver vaccumn packer. make whatever size bag i need then vac it. When I am ready to use if I just poke some holes in the plastic and throw it in the ammo can, safe, etc.

The desiccant packs from shoes, electronics and drugs work but you have to have a schedule for drying them also. Since they don't have the little blue dots in them to tell you when they have absorbed to much water you have to guess a bit. Don't microwave them like some of the good ones as they catch fire. Put them in the oven on low heat for a couple of hours.

For the safes or bigger areas, go to Walmart or Lowes and buy dessicant containers. These plastic containers are the size of a big cup and have dessicant at the top, underneath is empty and the water that the desiccant collects drips down into the cup.
That's a pretty cheap and good way to keep the moisture down.
