The other 30 or so 1st world countries have 5x less incarceration rate than the US per capita and generally much looser or even no restrictions for former felons. Up to the early 70's most free countries were tracking about the same for prisoners per capita , then the US skyrocketed another 400% higher than everyone else. Someone needs to figure out what happened, because building more prisons obviously aint working.

As to having a day in court etc, I worked and lived in 6 x 3rd world countries and my experience is you are better off with a legal system that lets a felon own a gun than one where the government takes all your rights for an infraction.

You're right. This system is the worst there is in the world. Except for all the others.

The comparison of the US to other countries is apples to oranges. US demographics are much different, land area and population are much larger. The welfare state fruit that was planted in the mid 60s really started to show results in the early 70s, broken families and increasing crime. From around 1992 to 2014, the US murder and other violent crime rates steadily dropped, down to a 50 year low. There was also a high rate of incarceration which one could reasonably assume had at least some responsibility for the crime decrease.

In 2015 we had the rise of BLM and the Ferguson effect. 2020 brought widespread violence for which no one (for the most part) was held accountable. This trend has continued with many prosecutors refusing to press charges, no-bail immediate releases, and disincentives for cops to engage in proactive policing.

You also have to take into account the difference in how crime stats are collected in different countries. Some of them tend to hide the true rates so as to not rile the peasants.

The war on drugs happened. Started with Reagan and was made even worse by Clinton and Biden in the 94 crime bill. It's a billion dollar business for private facilities and law enforcement benefit by getting extra funding and hours. There's money and profit in it all.

We can see how the war on drugs and mass incarnation affected the black family.

Not saying its bad, just saying its worse than it was. When someone argues to strip rights permanently after one stint in prison, you might as well be back in 17th century England or the USSR.

Was it the war on drugs or the sudden popularity of drugs as well?
