Detachable hi-cap SKS mags

I had an unknown brand of hi cap mags for my sks. I think removable is a... stretch. These do not work like ak mags where you just push a button and they fall gracefully on the floor and you just slap another one in. I used speed loaders for faster reloading personally.

Stripper clips are pretty fast, almost as fast as loading a 10 round magazine seperatley, if not just as fast/faster.

I've been told that the hi cap sks mags are pretty unreliable too, is this true?

I never found any reliable mags for an SKS conversion. If been well over 10 years since I tried this though, so maybe some newer mags would work.
However, you can get an SKS that is built to use AK type magazines. If I recall correctly, these are the "D" and "M" models.
I've got one. Mags fit well (probably tighter then in an AK), but they take a bit on finese to insert them into the mag well.

As others wrote, on a standard 10 round fixed box SKS, stripper clips work quite well.

SKS

I have been very happy with the Tapco SKS mags very strong, 3 different colors to choose from and not one malfunction yet with 100's of rounds down range. They are priced around 20 ea and are American made.:D

I have had no problems using Promag. I bought the gun from a pawn shop so I had no choice in whether or not it was modified. The lady bought it for me for Valentine's Day haha.

I have tried at least 5 different magazines for my SKS. They weren't very reliable. I find it easier and faster to use stripper clips. I don't really like any rifle I can't shoot comfortably from the prone position and those hi-cap magazines get in the way.

Myself and some buddies use TAPCO mags, and we have yet to have any problems. You do need to be careful not to let the receiver slam home on an empty mag because it will kill the feed lips, but other than that, they work like champs.

Be sure you have already satisfied the 18 USC 922(r) parts count rule before changing the magazine to a detachable, or else doing so is a felony.

In the past removable mags for SKS's kinda sucked but the TAPCO 20 round mags really work great.
I have never had a problem with any of mine in any SKS and they pop in and out very easy.
You can load them in the gun with strippers if you want but whats the point.
If you want to be able to put the magazine in or take it out of your gun with the bolt closed their is a very easy modification you can do to your bolt.

REmovable hi cap mags for SKSs are a real crapshoot. I had some that worked in my Yugo but not in my Norincos, some that didn't work in either. The only one I've found that seems to be reliable in any SKS I tried it in was a Xytel 30 round mag marked Cobray.

I've come to agree with brentn in that stripper clips are the best way to go with an SKS. That said, If I could find a few more of those Cobrays, I'd probably bu them if they weren't too expensive.

Thanks for the reminder, benEzra.

And thanks everybody else. It sounds like I might try one of the Tapco brand and see how that fares.

I've heard decent things on the Tapco. The Promags, well, they're Promags. Some say they work, most say they're trash (that goes for all of Promag's offerings, not just the SKS ones).

The only ones worth a damn for an SKS are the USA brand mags (good luck finding those) and the Tapco 20 rounders.

The 40 rounders you linked are total trash I have 2 I'll send you if you want them cause they never worked in my Yugo SKS.

They have detachable SKS mags that actually work and are easy to use now?

About all I have to say about them. I had a Norinco that would not work with whatever mag came with it, Tapco mags, or a couple US-made steel ones either (don't recall brands, this was a few years ago).

I've had terrible results in the past. If Tapco mags work, maybe. But consider this; If you really want detacheable mags that work all the time, are plentiful, rugged as anything, and can be removed while the bolt is locked in battery, get and AK. Really. I keep my SKS's mostly stock, and they load from the standard clips just fine once you get used to it. The factory original magazines always work great. I keep a ton of clips loaded and ready to go, so at the range I never have to load rounds into the clips.

Then I have the AKs, with a big pile of loaded 20 and 30 round mags. Same there-- never (or rarely) have to sit and load mags while at the range.

I have two TAPCO 5rd mags for hunting and they work well except they always feed the last round wrong if it is a 154gr soft point. Other than that they worked so well I ordered a high cap. I just keep them loaded with 4 softpoints and a FMJ as the last round. If I ever need all five while hunting I need to worry about a whole lot more than what kind of tip the bullet has.
