Does anyone have a reference to a document on the net that covers stripping a 1xxx S&W auto pistol? I picked up a 1006 today for $350 and it needs a serious cleaning. The gun doesn't appear to have ever been cleaned and has some minor staining on it. I've got a pretty good idea of how most of it comes apart but wanted to see if there was something available before I dived in. I was hoping to find something similiar to the HK doc that by Dr. Killjoy.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks man, but I've already got the owner's manual. I am looking for something a bit more in-depth than that. Removing grips, taking off the decocking/saftey levers, trigger removal. This gun is really filthy.

The only lick on the Gen 3 S&W autoloaders is that there are way too many small parts. Detail stripping is pretty involved. I think one of the Krause publications that has all the tear-down instructions has the Gen 3 S&Ws, but you'd do better to find an ultrasonic cleaner, toss it in, then re-lube.

I think you may be right, it is probably worth my time just to drop it off at the gunsmith and let them do the "hard work" of cleaning it up. Opportunity cost :)

Way too many small parts? Geeeez... It isn't a problem unless you remember the order in which you lost them. You have a sweet auto for a sweet price in a sweet caliber. Here's a link to the exploded from Numerich Arms:

All you have to do is pay attention when you are disassembling. It might not be a bad idea to take notes. I don't think it will be too much of a problem. The parts seem to make sense as to where the go in reassemble especially with a 'xploded diagram in front of you. Good luck and take the leap.

I have some detail strip instructions that I got off either The Firing Line or S&W forums if you'd like them. I followed them and detail stripped my 4566 without any fuss. If you can detail strip a 1911 or Glock, you should have no problems. Let me know if you want them and I can email you the document.

Do yourself a favor, bite the bullet, and buy a copy of

The Gun Digest Book of Firearms: Assembly/Disassembly : Part 1 : Automatic Pistols (Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly: Part 1 Automatic Pistols) by J. B. Wood (2nd Edition)

Amazon has it... And every gunshow I've gone to has a table of gun books, and this is almost always to be found.

It shows detail strip instructions for most modern handguns, isfull of photos, and tips, and can be had for around $20. Even if you don't use it with your S&W 10mm, you'll find a use later.

Amazon has a used copy for $17.50 plus shipping. (I think I have a copy of the First Edition I'll sell for less, shipped.)

Detail Strip instructions S&W1006- 6906

Hi Pokey074
Just bought a used S&WM6906 which I presume has the same manual with any 3rd Generation S&W pistol such as a 1006. I would like to detail strip this pistol and clean its internals. Would you by chance still have detail strip instructions? I would appreciate very much if you can have it posted or at least emailed.
Thanks very much. Cheers

The video tape or CD on S&W autos from American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) goes into abundant detail on function and disassembly/reassembly. It is not, however, the most exciting video around.
