Any way to tell what choke an unmarked barrel is? I have a Savage 24 .22mag/20gauge combo. The shotgun barrel throws foster-type slugs all over the place. I've heard that these shoot best through I/C tubes. I've also read that the 24C models have cylinder bores, whereas many of the other 24s are full choke. Any way for a layman to gauge a barrel to determine its choke?

If you have an accurate caliper, you can measure the bore diameter at the muzzle.

I'm sure, somewhere on the web, you can find the measurements for all chokes.

Thanks, Inspector. I just did a web search, and the tables at this site provide enough detail to "guesstimate" the choke simply by measuring the diameter of the bore just inside the muzzle. My 24's barrel gauges at 0.587, indicating full choke. I guess to be precise, one would need to measure the length of the constriction (choke) and the diameter of the bore in front of the constriction, but I'm not sure what I'd gain by that ... unless the choke proved to be too short, in which case I'd have a different problem to solve.

I have had several 24s over the years. In fact, one of my teenage guns was a Model 24, 22/410. That was 55 years ago. I am a rule violator when it comes to hunting. I use the sights. Thus, I have a problem. I've never had one that would shoot to the same POA with both barrels. The last one I bought, the 22 was very accurate but the shotgun barrel shot extremely high and to the left when using the sights.

I know that shotguns should be used without using sights so this is in some ways immaterial. Yet, I'd like for them to be more regulated as they are very versatile guns.

ev, must be luck of the draw. Mine put Rottweils to the same point at 40 yards with the aftermarket peep sight as Remington Hi Vel HPs.

It didn't do so good on flying game, but was pure death on squirrels.
