Detroit teacher carrying hammer for protection

An article in today's Detroit Free Press states that crime has become such a problem that some Detroit teachers are carrying hammers for protection, and the schools are looking to hire dozens of laid off police officers to protect the campuses: http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060303/OPINION01/603030337/1068/OPINION

The school mentioned in the article is Marquette Elementary on Detroit northeast side. The great irony is that the school is in one of the safest neighborhoods in Detroit. It is on Canyon St. just one block from Grosse Pointe -- an area that is commonly known as "Copper Canyon" for all of the police officers and firefighters who live there. They live there because they have to live in the City, and it is on the very edge of the City next to an affluent suburb. When I met my wife, I was living just over a mile west of the school (on Yorkshire Rd. in the area known as "East English Village"), and she was living just a few blocks south of the school on Ashley St.
 
A night high school principal of my acquaintance used to carry a 5 cell mag lite flashlight. He needed it to check in storage rooms where there was not enough light and to light the way when students were leaving the building. Of course, it would have made one fine club, fully capable of flattening about anyone hit with it, but I am sure he never thought of it as a weapon. No ex-special forces officer would think of something so innocent as a weapon. No way.

My wife keeps one of those thick yardsticks with the metal ends near her. Crack a kid over the melon with one of those and it's gonna hurt. Wish she could carry there. Buncha animals she teaches.

Father, you may have been out of the area too long........Police and Firemen in Detroit no longer have to live in the city. Happened 8 or 10 years ago. Since then, real estate values have plummeted, and the area is now a stye. I knew this area as I grew up in Eastpointe and went to school in Harper Woods. My sister lived in that area for quite a while too. You don't want to go there, EVEN during daylight hours.
 
I wonder if the old saying is true....are all the problem kids looking like nails?

A hammer makes for a pretty poor weapon. Its only effective if you have room to actually swing it. So its a contact weapon that isnt any use at actual contact distance. Someone give her something sharp instead, or is that not an option in the rock city?
 
How about a mason's hammer, or a roofer's hatchet (hammer)?
I'd think of one with a fiberglass handle so it could be cut down. A few wraps of hockey (friction) tape for a new handle and you'll be able to swing real close like.....:evil:
 
Or this one. "When hammers are outlawed will only outlaw carpenters have hammers?"
 
Don't underestemate the abilities of a heavy rip claw framing hammer. They can and have killed people with ease. The thing is, the claw will almost effortlessly penetrate the skull bones, which is the intention, because roofers often use them to punch a hole through a roof in order to stop themselves while sliding off.
