So today I was at my favorite gun shop and came upon a used but in like-new condition Arsenal SLR-95. It came complete with the original box and all accessories and a 5rd mag. Price listed was $589 so I put $150 down on it and now its on layaway for me!

Since I don't have it yet I don't have a pic of it but here's a pic I snagged off the internet....

As you can see it comes with a thumbhole stock which will have to go once I finally take possession of the rifle.

Sure about the stock?

I picked up an SA85M a while back, with the thumbhole stock, and swore it would be the first to go. And then I shot it. And now, I really like it. I know it doesn't look quite right, but it feels good, shoulders well, and I don't see any need to "upgrade" it to something less comfortable. Play with that stock first before you can it.

Can you legally take the thumbhole stock off and replace it with a standard stock?

As far as I know you can as long as the replacement parts are US made. I'm not sure what is US made already on these guns, maybe someone can shed some more light on this. The owner of the gun shop where I'm buying this from seemed to think I could replace the stock without issue when I asked him about doing so.

I'm not a big fan of thumbhole stocks never have been.

Yes, as long as you ensure you have the appropriate number of US parts.

Mine ended up with US buttstock, foregrip, and fire control parts (total of 5--not threaded for a flash suppressor, else it'd need 6).

Sec 922r should be required reading for all gun owners. :)

Anyone have a list of the parts that already US made on this gun so I know what to replace?

If I add a US made pistol grip and buttstock to this gun, what other parts are easy to replace so I can make sure the gun is in full compliance. Is the handguard US made?

Thanks

Milled receiver AKs only need 4 parts with pined brake/bare muzzel, 5 with threaded muzzel (vs. 5 bare, 6 threaded for stamped).

So US buttstock and US FCG will do it.

Remember you'll need a lower tang installed to install a milled stock. Some Arsenals already have a groove milled and hole drilled for the tang, some don't.

That gun is 100% Bulgarian as it was "sporting" to import.

Easiest thing for you to do is replace the fire control group with either an Arseanl Inc US one or G2 (3 parts). Then use a US pistol grip (1 part) and the stock of your choice.

I bought an SLR-95 from a forum member here about 3 years ago. This is what I did to mine.

I think the Bulgarian fire control group is excellent, so I didn't replace it. The Bulgarian FCG is of much higher quality than a US made FCG. I just replaced the stock, pistol grip, hand guards, follower and mag base plate to get the parts count up to 5.

Geojap....

That looks beautiful, thats what I mine to look like. I'm thinking of doing the same thing because I want to leave the internal parts as they are.

How much did that folding stock cost you and where can I find one? I also really like the green furniture, I was considering wood but looking at yours I've changed my mind.

Thanks :)

In my web page that I posted, I go into some explanation about the different stages of transformation of the rifle and there are links to the parts makers, so there is much more info there. The stock is an Ace skeleton folder and can be found at http://riflestocks.com/index2.htm . It cost about $160. In my opinion, the Ace folder is the best folding stock that I have ever seen. It's awesome.

Thanks

So maybe I'll go this route and make up the additional needed parts with the mag floorplate and follower.

Considering these are 100% Bulgarian I'd like to keep it as mechanically original as possible.

Thanks for all your help guys.

I picked up the gun today, glad I ordered the parts in advance and just got done putting it together. I love the way it feels now and can't wait to shoot it this weekend!

I decided to go with the US made buttstock, pistol grip and mag idea.

I picked up a mag from Tapco that counts as three compliant parts and although its made by Promag:barf: at least I can keep more original parts on the gun and if the mag turns out to be a real dog then I can scrap that idea and purchase some new parts.

Anyway at least it looks more like a traditional AK despite the crappy mag.

If you add a US made fore end and gas piston, you can use any milsurp AK mag you like. Neither of these items is difficult to change out.
