Sounds like the new "L" frame guns that are replacing the "K" frame Magnums might be what you want. I think they are only offering 4" barrels right now, but I wouldn't be suprised to see other lengths soon.

I have shot the 4" 7 shot version without the lug. It was a military olive drab color with fixed sights from the S&W custom shop. Shot fantastic and quite a bit lighter than the full lug version. Should be a great gun in 2". A used 2 1/2" 66 might be a bit cheaper and there are lots of them out there. The downfall of this gun is that the ejector rod is not long enough to push the empties clear of the cylinder and they must be plucked out by hand. Makes for not so fast reloads. I have a model 60 3" 357 (full lug 5 shot J frame) that is the same way. Have to make the first 5 count.

No. The shortest non-full-lugged 686 was the 5-inch half-lugged special run they did last year (maybe two years ago?). Now, the 619 & 620 are effectively 4" half-lugged 686's; but any shorter than that, and it's gonna have a full lug. As noted, the 66 or 19 k-frame snub is as close as you're gonna get--at least in steel. If you want to go with an airlite, there's THIS , a 3.125" 18.5 oz. 7-shot .357 l-frame. They also made it in a 2.5" for a time (the 386pd), which was almost-but-not-quite-completely fully underlugged.

Nota bena: these airlite .357's are not for inexperienced shooters, or for someone who wants to shoot their revolver a lot and enjoy it.
