I have a 2.5 inch snub-nosed 686-2 and I am considering trading it for a 686 (no-dash) with a 4 inch barrel. Is there any major difference between a 686-2 and a 686 (no dash)?

Todd

The 686 no-dash had a recall, so make sure it is stamped with an M in it otherwise you will need to send it back to the factory. The no dash will also have the hammer-mounted firing pin, which I think was eliminated on your 686-2, yes?

No, my 686-2 has the hammer mounted firing pin as well. I appreciate the information aboput the recall. I'll have to check and see if it was sent back. Any other differences or are they basically the same gun? His has a square butt and mine is round, but that's primarily cosmetic as far as I'm concerned.

The round butt is merely because yours is a snub nose.

686-No dash changed to 686-1 when they added a floating hand and a "radius stud package" (not sure what this is, but this is from the SCSW). Any 686 or 686-1 needs the "M" stamp to show it has been altered from the recall or else returned for repair. 686-2 changed the hammer nose, bushing and associated parts. Other than that, they are the same gun except for barrel and butt.

Not being an expert in pistols, what does "changed the hammer nose bushings and associated parts" mean in real terms? Also, what is a floating hand?

I appreciate the help!

Todd

A floating hand is a piece of the gun's mechanics between the trigger and the hand, if you don't open your guns up it doesn't matter.

As for the hammer nose, look at the two hammer noses, they should be a little bit different, and the bushings and associated parts are, as well. Really, nothing major at all.

What was recalled was all 686-nodash and 686-1 guns. With certain types of ammo in certain situations, the gun can lock up if it has not been modified. If you have a 686-2 or later don't worry about it. Otherwise, you need to send the gun in to Smith, get the modification made and it will come back with an M stamp on it showing work was done.

My 686 no dash no M is awesome. Great trigger. Better than my other Smiths except for my Model 14 which I believe was worked on at some time.I shoot mostly downloaded .357 brass.
