Difference between .410 slug and .45 Long Colt?

The 410 run out of steam around 50 to 60 yards. Put 410 slug in and you can find some good info on here.

.400

Mike: Thanks for that link. I will be ordering some.
BTW - 0000 buck is .38 caliber(and very hard to find). 000 buck is .36". 00 is .33". 0 is .32".

If someone made a hollow-base .375 dia. projectile in the 180-250 grain weight range, I'm guessing a .410 slug could be made that would be adequate for deer at 50 yards or closer.
Nope.....it would tumble. The big problem is length. That 180-250 grain HB slug would be long and narrow. In a smoothbore, there is no way to stablize it. The slug in the earlier photo was a 148 grain HBWC. It tumbled after only 15 feet.....make it longer and the problem gets worse.
Pete
PS - I have a swaging press.

With .40 cal balls at 1200 fps? I can understand needing more projectiles at that distance due to the spread but I don't see how the four at that speed would poop-out at 60 yds.

Slugs

Thanks for that link. Did you take a look at their slug offerings? I know that those are for the Judge which has rifling; I wonder, though, how well they would shoot in a smoothbore.
I also wonder, frankly, about their velocity claims.
Pretty neat stuff if it works. Pricey.

They surely don't have a problem making exaggerated claims.
1300fps and 168gr = 630 ft.lb. which iffin I remember right is less than 700 and nowhere close to the 1000 to 1200 a 44 mag will produce.
I'd bet a pretty good sum that those velocity claims are from a long gun and if shot from a Judge wouldn't get close to their claims.
My 24" barreled '92 in 45 Colt will shoot a 250gr Speer golddot 1100fps into cloverleaf groups at 50 yards, They expand to over .8" and will penetrate more than 12" of ballistic gel and from what I read they leave baseball size exit wounds on deer.
And that's standard pressure loads, with the '92s action strength I've run loads that get into serious big game # like 330gr @ 1500fps

I'll also point out the fact that I have a 172gr LSWC load that goes over 1100fps from my SP101 makes me completely unimpressed in even these "improved" 410 loads.

RE those velocity claims: I imagine their claims of 1100 FPS for their 0000 3" 5-ball and 1200 FPS for their 0000 2.5" 4-ball are from a long barrel shotgun... doesn't seem too out-of-whack to me. But to claim those velocities from a Judge does seem a bit far-fetched. I think they're playing "catch me if you can" with their verbiage. They don't actually state those velocities are from a Judge... just insinuate it. Word games are sneaky though and not a tactic I appreciate from a seller... or anyone.
