The 66 is a K-frame and the next size up from the 5 shot J-frame. Nice handy size running just over 30 ounces. My favorite Smith revo size.
The 686 is the L-frame and is the next size up from the 66. It has a larger frame that makes it more comfortable to shoot with magnums. They come in 6 and 7-shot flavors.
The model 66 has the "nipped off" forcing cone to accomodate the smaller frame and cylinder diameter. Nice gun (I own two) but not a good choice for lots of magnums.
