I have an older 3 position collapsable stock for my AR that has given me yeoman service over the years and have been thinking of updating it as of late to the newer 6 position ribbed stock that currently seems to be all the rage.

My question is whether or not the increased cost is worth the benefit? Other than sexy new styling and a greater range of adjustment does the newer style offer any other advantages that are not apparent to the eye? ie. does it offer increased surface area for a more solid stock weld?

For those who have or have used both styles please give my your input.

Thanks!

And YES this is for a pre-ban rifle lest anyone get the wrong idea.:p

Is it worth upgrading to this?

New M4 stocks are sturdier and suppost to wobble less than older CAR stock. Six position setting does allow you more flexibility in the lenghth of pulls, but if 2-4 position works ok, I see no use for additional two settings.

Frankly I think even those stocks are old news now. If you want really nice collapsable stock look into Vltor carbine stock. It is more solid than old stock, and cheek storage attatchments allows wider and more comfortable cheek weld. Check out equipment exchange at AR15.com for all the good deals on AR parts.

YES. I own the 6-position stock and it is an absolute dream. There are several advantages and I'll list them"

First, the sling swivel is in the proper place and easy to use.
The stock footprint is the same as an A2 sock whicn means it will sit lower on your shoulder for more control. The standard CAR stock is much to small.
The butt of this stock is canted so that it's more like a sporter rifle stock. The heel is more forward than on the awkward Stoner-Designed stock and the CAR stock as well. Those older designs encourage the stock to dig into your shoulder at the heel.
It is longer than the A2 stock if you have long arms or, in my case, if you like a shorter stock.
More adjustment positions means that you can get it JUST RIGHT. For instance, my 5-foot-tall son, 4-foot-tall daughter, and I can all shoot the gun in the same session.
It's STRONGER by far.
The new castle-nut that holds it on is much stronger and gives better support while being easier to install at the same time.

I have a Bushy with the old telestock on it. I looked at the newer ones a couple times and thought... nah, another gimmic. I don't need one that's "stronger" when mine's strong enough.

Then, while looking over AR's at one of the larger gun shops the other day, I picked up and shouldered one of the new style stocks...

I'll be ordering one just as soon as I acquire more project funds!

I have always liked the feel of the A2 stock, but not the look or lack of adjustability... This has all three. It feels like a regular stock, but telescopes for storage and to adjust to my 12 year old son and 5'5" wife, and looks "normal" on a carbine.

Hey Badger, is that a mid-length barrel on yours, or does it just look that way because you don't have the uber-cool extra fat M4 HGs? ;)

It's a mid-length from Rock River arms. It looks more natural and since I've got such long arms, I like the extra bearing area. It's a great compromise.

Consider the Magpul M93A stock:

This stock is incredibly strong and "solid". The cheek-weld is superior by design, with the stock in any position.

It's also modular and will accept different "stocks" (e.g. a PSG -style stock) and tail-pieces as they are developed.

Funny... My chrome lined, mid-length RRA/Wilson barrel should be back from KKF next week. It will be installed on a pre-ban Bushy that will soon after be getting the "M4" telestock upgrade :)

But at least they won't be twins... mine will have a KKF-chopped carry handle and an OKO.

I really like the mid-length as well, both for looks and functionality. I've read that the recoil is less because of the longer gas tube, but I don't know that first hand.

I even e-mailed Bushmaster about it, and got a response from a CS rep that they "get a few inquiries about them now and again, so keep 'em coming and maybe management will take notice".

Take care...

The Magpul stock is outstanding. It has been slow to catch on due to the expense; but it is really revolutionary. Not only a better cheek weld but a more consistent one as well, on top of that it has much more adjustment range and is completely indistiguishable from an A2 fixed stock for solidness when locked into position.
