Different magazines for different models working?

So I have a Smith & Wesson SD9VE and I ordered the wrong mag, late night wasn't paying attention. Well it came in today, a CZ 75B mag and I decided to see if it fits in the SD9VE. It does, and 9mm snap caps function fine in it when racking the slide manually. The mag doesn't lock the slide back, but seems to work with 9mm snap caps. I plan on trying it this weekend to see if I get good results with it. Anyone else try this? I would like to see if mags for different models work in other guns.

I haven't, but if it does run, changing the follower with one of other mags, might cure the lock back problem. If it works, the mags may be Mec-Gar std.
I believe my Sig mags are made by Mec-Gar, but can't be sure off-hand.

I would not try it on a bet!
My guns simply must work, 100%, all the time.
If they don't, I fix them, or get rid of them.

Stuffing the wrong mag in a gun may fit.
And sorta work.

But it may also be wearing rub marks on the bottom of the slide, or wearing out parts in other places you least suspect.
Or jam in the middle of saving your life!

You bought the wrong mag because by your own admission, you weren't paying attention.

Not paying attention when it comes to guns , and ordering parts for guns is a very bad idea!

Using the wrong mag in a gun it wasn't made for, even after you are aware of it, is even worse.

I carry 1911 mags in my Kahr 45 from time to time as it is well known they work in the .45 cal Kahrs

Unless the mag you're using was specifically designed for that particular gun, I wouldn't use it. The fact that the mag doesn't lock the slide back should be telling you that this might cause wear and tear on various parts of your gun and lead to reliability issues somewhere down the road. Sell the mag (or better yet get a CZ75 to use it in), and get one that's made for your SD9VE.

I use S&W 59 series mags in my Daewoo DP51 and AR15 mags in the DR200, but they were designed to use them.

I also use CZ75 mags in my TZ75, but it was designed to use it.

Factory mags don't always work as they should, and many guns will not be 100 percent 100% of the time.

In the case cited in the OP, the mag DID did work. If you use a different "brand" of mag for a while and it works without problems, you've got a spare magazine.

A lot of mags are more similar than you'd think -- because there are only a few ways you can double-stack or single-stack a set number of rounds in a given space. That "given space" is dictated by the size of the rounds and the mag's capacity, and hand the gun is designed to fit. That basic similarity isn't all that surprising. Mag release notches are generally the biggest problem area -- they're often in about the same place, but use a different SHAPE or size of the opening in the mag tube to engage the release itself.

If it works I'd use it as a range mag, not one that absolutely had to work.

Sometimes mags will fit in other firearms not printed for. Glock, XD have some mag interchangeability. Para P14 mags will fit in anything built off the P14 frame. Walther PPQ M1 and P99AS mags are virtually identical except for follower color. But these are all magazines with the same firearm makers. I would not try a magazine between two gun manufactures.

I seriously doubt it. Not the jamming part, I dont doubt the gun won't be 100% with the cz mag in it. But I also don't plan to use it for that purpose either, it is a range mag and nothing more.
