So I have a question...

Savage sells bare "Target Actions" http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/actions/target/

However, they also sell the bare bones Stevens 200, which a lot of people seem to use for just the action. For my future build I was planning on going this route, but now I am wondering if the Savage Target Action is superior to that of the Stevens line.

Is there any difference besides the price and the fact that the Target action isnt open on top? It would be nice to have a SS action but since their actions sell for $600 MSRP and the Stevens 200 is about $350 MSRP I wonder if one would be better suited to a target rifle.

I also realize the bare actions come with the Accutrigger which I will admit is good, but I would prefer a Rifle Basix trigger or similar.

it depends on what you are building i suppose. If i were building an accuracy rig, or stationary varminter, id probably go with the target action. If it was going to be a hunting rifle, or snoop and shoot varmint rig id go with the repeater action. If you like stainless you can always get a spray on finish that comes pretty close in color. One note is that that Target action also comes with the lighter target accutrigger

Unless I was going to concentrate only on F-class, I'd buy a used Stevens short action if it were me. Many, many fine long range tactical weapons have been built from the humble Savage 10 action. Hit up the SnipersHide forums and run a search and you'll find everything you need there.

You can buy a Stevens rifle for well under $350... I've seen them with a cheapo scope brand new for 299.... sell off the barrel and other parts and you could get your investment down to 200-250 bucks

Ok thanks, I know some competitive shooters have built off the Stevens action with excellent results. I am also aware of how much they normally cost but I was just listing the MSRP off the Savage website.

The single shot target action would probably be the stiffest one of the bunch, as the bottom is also solid. Would be easier to bed, and has the lightest of the accutriggers(oz vs Lbs) Is it worth the extra money? Good question.

Get the a use short action rifle pull the action and have it trued, blueprinted. Then start putting on the pieces you want.

Remember target shooting is not cheap, no matter how hard you try.
