I have had this revolver for over a year, really like the revolver but am not 100% comfortable with the factory stocks. Has anyone swapped them out with something else, and why? With the current ones I find myself shifting my hand position frequently. I don't have large hands, maybe that's part of my problem. Any opinions are appreciated. I'm only shooting at paper targets at my leisure, no fast shooting.

modified Hogue

I'm sure I'm not spelling Hogue correct. They are the standard S&W rubber stocks.
I have small hands and I used a file and a sander to remove most of the finger notches and took off much of the pebble texture on my Hogue grips.
You get the benefit of a smaller grip and enough texture and shape to retain the same grip on each draw.
Cost is cheap too.

Robctwo, I really like the looks of those Ahrends, especially on that Mountain Gun. I'll have to look into those.

I have a re-stocked 625 - Guy Hogue Rosewood in the large size
if you look at the options at the GH website there's smaller
sizes w/opions available as well. Note for most of the
pics the first one will have the correct wood, then w/options 2nd through
the last the wood may not be correct, but the options are

look at the compact size for an N frame - you can get them smooth
or checkered and/or finger grooves. I prefer Rosewood but
Coco Bolo Tuipwood and Kingwood are other exotic hardwoods avail.

I had the K/L Compact grips and they wroked quite well - on a 686P I 4" Bbl. sold to a good friend who has smaller hands than mine and he loves it.

I bought the Mountain Gun used, lnib. The Ahrends came on it. They have the polyurethane finish. I cleaned the gun a couple times with the stocks on, and they got real sticky. I need to strip them, and put on another coat of poly, or oil them. The tung oil finish seems to be better. I'll probably need to re-oil them on occasion as time goes on.
