Looking at getting a second weapon for off-duty (possibly on-duty back up) and home defense...

I know where i can get a good deal on a Kahr, but at heart am old school enough to seriously consider a revolver...

Whereas i know the SP-101 is too big to be carried in an ankle holster, its reputation almost has me sold hands down...then you add to it the potent .357 and i am 90% sold....

then the Kahr deal arises and i am very interested because i know they are up and coming in their own right, and i could get in in the same caliber as my duty weapon...

any thoughts?

Have you carried on the ankle before?
Do you have any other options?
The reason I ask, is that for some folks it's uncomfortable and awkward.

Were it me, I'd opt for the lightest possible, with whatever has proven reliable.

If you are carrying .40 as your primary, it wouldn't be a bad idea to carry the same cal in your back-up.

I presume you have to get approval on your BU piece...

Some notables:
Kahr PM40.
Walther PPS .40 (pending release).
Springfield EMP.
Glock 27.
Not .40, but looks promising: Boberg XR9 (pending release).
Of course there are the uberlight S&W revos.
Ruger SP-101, built like a tank, but almost as heavy :D

yeah i just mentioned ankle carry as an example...one kind of carry i had thought of was to use a 'bellyband' style holster and mount it under my vest so that the gun is exposed to the side of my vest as though it were a shoulder holster...(just my crazy mind thinking)...

As far as policy goes, the back-up weapon does need approval by our chief and i have to be able to take it through the same qual. course as my standard duty weapon..by choice i carry the G23...

I am also seriously considering one of the "uberlight" S&Ws that you mention..my Mother-in-law just bought a 642 (not that she has shot it yet, but that is another LONG story) that i have taken to the range and i love it...

as far as revolvers go i really have no loyalty...honestly the only revolvers i have shot have been S&Ws (19's and the 642), but i love the way the ruger feels in the hand, like you said...solid...

just working it through in my head before i go to buy...BIG gun show coming up in a few weeks in Tulsa and i would like to have an idea before i go

342 airlight

My preferred bug is a S&W 342 airlight(hammerless) in 38spl. This only weighs 11ozs and is 100% reliable and shoots POA well. Just my .02.......

Yep, I second the G27, since you'd have both ammo AND magazine commonality w/ your service pistol as well as the same manual of arms.
Also, if your not fond of ankle carry, try a holster that will attach to your soft body armour velcro side straps and wear it under your uniform shirt.
