Discreet transportation of a long gun

i dont know about the rest of you guys...but at least to ME, the "coat over the rifle bag" and the "long skinny cardboard box" are dead give aways. Unless I've gone insane, dont rifles and shotguns COME in long skinny cardboard boxes? doesnt seem like a very good disguise to me. I think just about everyone will be on to that one.

Why even bother with the guitar cases and such? Just dis-assemble it and put it in a common duffle bag. ;)

Mr. Trooper: The person who is sheepish and shortsighted enough to call the police over someone lawfully transporting a long gun to their vehicle is also very likely not to be smart enough to think anything of it if something not obviously gun-shaped is present.

Lots of stuff comes in long skinny boxes. Like roses and fishing poles and fancy light fixtures.

Blackhawk or TacForce discrete cases, they're rectangular and are pretty non-descript.

Take the barrels off and roll everything up in a sleeping bag. You could also hide the guns in rolled up pieces of carpet.

Why even bother with the guitar cases and such? Just dis-assemble it and put it in a common duffle bag.

Because:

a) The gun in question may not be easily made shorter, a bolt-action rifle for example.

b) A padded guitar case offers protection to the gun that a duffle bag doesn't.

c) Better mis-direction. The contents of a duffle bag cannot be easily discerned and could be numerous things, thus inviting further inquiry or inspection. A guitar case is assumed by most people to contain a guitar.

d) A padded guitar case holds its shape when carrying a gun. A duffel bag tends to conform to the shape of the gun unless padded with filler.

e) Sometimes breaking down a gun that can be easily disassembled, such as an AR-15, defeats the purpose of having the gun with you in the first place. If I am carrying an AR as a trunk or behind-the seat-of-the-pickup gun I don't want to have to reassemble it if I need it quickly.

I bought a golf bag for $2 at a garage sale

It's perfect. The only other investment was $8 for a few club head covers to go over the barrels.
I even leave it propped up against my car for a few minutes just so everyone can walk by and ignore it

Instrument case

Or something that looks even remotely like one.

When I got my AR I also picked up a cheap $20 paintball gun case. It works. I've had some people (people who know me through a friend usually) ask me if I play guitar before. I usually tell them "No, I don't play. I just like to carry one around all day just in case I suddenly want to learn to play." Then they look at me funny. Mission accomplished.

If you are lawfully transporting legal firearms for legal use then your neighbors can be cordially invited to take a flying fornication at a rolling doughnut.

These are about $32 at Lowes. 20" Monster Mouth Tool Bag. Reinforced bottom, shoulder strap, padded feet. Lots of big pockets for ammo or cleaning supplies or binoculars or whatever. Very heavy duty.

I also use a Bowling Ball Bag (Holds 2 balls normally) that I found in the trunk of a car in a junkyard. It is nylon with a hard bottom, very strong, I used to carry 70 lbs of mechanics tools in it when I had to fly to job sites. I last used it to haul a large quantity of guns and ammo to a range shoot with my family. I almost couldn't pick it up, it had 2000 rounds of ammo and 4 pistols in it.

If I am transporting only one or two pistols and such, then I use one of these (Kind of stereotypical to a spy movie or something but they work well and look cool) I take out the tool board in the lid and put in extra foam, or else take everything out and just use it empty. Holds 2 or so pistols in cases, plus ammo, a small cleaning kit, my ears, etc. and it is lockable, meets the definition for locked hard case for FED regulations...:

I happen to agree with you but, there are some practicle considerations. The most significant is that if people know there are guns in your house/apartment it makes you a target for theft. You do need to leave from time to time.

Discrete carry is of significant importance to me because I dont have a car, so if it is going to the range it needs to be transportable by motorcycle. I suppose that I *could* legally carry in a rifle bag, but I would like to avoid the inevitable hassle that would innevitably result from that. All of my long guns are of the type that can be broken down to a size that can be fit into a large backpack, so this is typically what I would do. If that werent a possibility I would go with the gig-bag idea, although I would probably look way too *cool* with a guitar *and* a motorcycle at the same time that I would innevitably be asked numerous pointed questions about what I play, and I know jack about guitars.

Unless of course you happen to be home, in which case I think you'd be much less of a target.

My dad will be amused when he finds out the market for used trombone cases. He is a trombonist and has more trombones than I have rifles. He has a spare baritone case if anyone wants a particularly unusual gun case.

I use a gun sock for my Schmidt-Rubin 1911 rifle, I haven't found a case long enough to hold it. I don't worry about what people see. My range bag is a Land's End diaper bag that my wife stopped using. It's not perfect; once the main compartment is full of brass I sometimes don't have individual pockets for each handgun. The price was right, and it's the perfect hidden-in-plain-sight bag.

On another forum I read about folding "camp chairs" that come with a thin outside bag. The bags will fit most guns. Having a name like LL Bean or Eddie Bauer on the outside helps the deception.

A Long Bag with a Camera Tripod and Photo Accessories Attached

People see what they think they are supposed to see. I was taking a shooting course, had to stay in a hotel, didn't want to leave the shotgun in the hotel room and didn't want to walk through the lobby every day with a gun case so I bought a long Domke camera bag (they use it for projection screens) and a Slik tripod. Put the shotgun in a coupla old towels secured with bungee cord, put the tripod on the outside with velcro-closed straps and carried it over my shoulder. No one ever gave me a second look. My proudest moment was when one of the other shooters asked me "Why the hell are you carrying around all that camera equipment for all the time?" (No, he wasn't pulling my leg he was serious). Also, as has been mentioned, one of those hard plastic golf bag protector carriers on wheels. Also consider a golf bag on one of those heavy duty tripods with a coupla six yard sale clubs sticking out and the guns in gun socks. People see what they want to see.
