this will be a long post, but i think it is worth reading as i can't believe it is happening right now here today.

a good friend of mine was recently recruited by our state for a job. he is a mechanic, i/e this is not a national security issue or anything.

anyway, when originally contacted for the job he was told he must be registered as a Democrat if he was gonna be chosen. his answer was oh well, i guess i don't want this job. but as it turned out when the primaries came to ohio the republican ticket was a done deal, so we both were one of the 16000 ohioans that jumped ship and voted against someone on the democratic ticket.

shortly after that he gets called for the interviewing process and they told him we didn't think you'd register democratic, so we wrote you off.

anyway, he got hired as a temp, when he was working out very well and he was being screened as a permanent employee he was asked to give up his ccw card. he would not. eventually they overlooked that, but when he went to his "indoctrination class" he was one of ten "Democrats" in the class, but the first 9 all got there state i.d. and went home. he was then called in and grilled extensively as to what and why he had attempted to buy 3 firearms in the last year(3 background checks). he told them it was none of there business and he was told he was being rejected as a permanent employee. after a few phone calls between the hiring office in columbus (who was handling the i.d.) and his branch office the issue eventually got put to rest and he was hired.

unfortunately it would be near impossible to document this for legal purposes because it was all done verbally only, but i just thought i'd share this w/ the rest of the world as i was not fully aware of just how one sided our own government types had gotten and how many of our rights were being trampled everyday. comments welcome, thanx.

So he attempted to buy the firearms? Was he turned down?

He was told he was being rejected for permanent because of the guns, or was he given another reason(if any at all)?

What were these phone calls about? Was he pushing for permanent status? Someone going to bat for him?

When asked to give up his ccw permit, was there a reason? And was it more like you won't be able to carry here?

We need more information here. What you're describing isn't even close to legal here in the state of Ohio, or any other place I can think of.

Are you saying that the State of Ohio is the employer here, or a provate company contracted by the State?

The guy was a mechanic presumably applying for a mechanics position and they sent him to an indoc class and somehow managed to get their hands on Federal NICS data?

Something isn't right here.

the issue eventually got put to rest and he was hired.

The ACLU is only interested in cases that are going to set a precedent and be newsworthy. I, too, am asking that someone fill in between the lines because some facts are missing here.

This is illegal on state and federal employment grounds, state and federal election law, state and federal civil rights grounds......Hell, if it is a pattern of abuse, intimidation etc it could be prosecuted under the RICO statutes.

This entire thread is useless without some context.

Name the name of the employer that did this. You're doing no one a favor by shielding their identity.

if he got hired how was he discriminated against? if they didn't i could understand the noise but he got the job

You're kidding right? The ACLU is only interested in furthering left wing causes.

no fan of the aclu but they sent a lawyer down to virginia defend a guys right to burn a cross. a black lawyer who was sucessful in his defense

Agreed.

Let's leave shots at the ACLU out of this until we have some idea what we are talking about.

Where is the OP?

sounds very very fishy.

If he was being hired to work for the actual Democratic National Committee, the possibly restricing hiring to it's members may be legal. Same if he was being hired by a church, but beyond that, asking about your political party and rejecting someone because of that is equal to asking about religious beliefs and rejecting them because of that.

Most local government hiring in Illinois is influenced strongly by political considerations. so I would not completely discount the story. It does seem unlikely that they would be as brazen as this post suggests, but you just never know.

one thing to realize, is unless you have some record of it ( recording, memo, some one coming forward.)

You have no chance of wining.

I am not sure there is anything to win. He got hired so he really was not harmed in a legal sense.

verbally people get more comfortable than they should this sort of thing is not unheard of, will just take a recorded conversation like what happened to planned parenthood to help fix this. Until then...

I told my current employer that I had a CCW during the interview process. Their exact words were "Good, we don't have to pay for a background check then". During a follow up interview the next HR person I talked to had "reservations about hiring somebody that owned guns". He let the decision to hire me fall on the other guy and wouldn't make a stand either way because of it. BTW it's for a law office.

I have had the same response. On another job my background check was back in 2 days. The HR person said it normally takes a week or more and it was because of my CCW that it went through so fast.
