Dispute ends in shooting death

Killeen Daily Herald

Tuesday night was not the first time law enforcement personnel have visited the residence where a 20-year-old Killeen man was shot dead Tuesday night during a domestic disturbance, according to police and neighbors.

Police found Andrew Trevor Reed, 20, with gunshot wounds lying in a driveway of a home in the 3100 block of Westrim Drive, according to a Killeen Police Department news release.

Reed was transported to Fort Hood's Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced him dead at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls about shots fired at about 10:30 p.m. While en route, they learned that someone had been shot as part of a domestic disturbance.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Reed had gone to the residence to speak with his ex-girlfriend. The two began to argue; Reed shoved his ex-girlfriend. The woman's mother saw the shove and stepped in to break up the fight, police said in the news release.

Reed then struck the mother. The mother's husband told the him to leave, but Reed began to "aggressively approach" the husband, police said. The husband shot the ex-boyfriend and called 911.

An autopsy has been ordered at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Levi Taylor said he witnessed the shooting from his bedroom window.

"I seen 13 gunshots last night," Taylor said. "It was pitch black dark ... all I could see was bam, bam, bam."

Taylor said he heard one gunshot, looked out his window and saw more gunshots fired and Reed lying in the driveway. Taylor's mother and brother went into his room when they heard the shots.

Taylor said he feared for his life and reached to cover his dog's mouth to muffle the animal's barking.

Taylor, his mother, brother and a neighbor – who requested their names be withheld – all said Killeen police had been called to the home several times since last summer.

KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said officers have made several trips to the home this year, but could not say why, citing that the case is still being investigated.

Taylor's mother, Barbara Smoot, said during an incident last summer, shots were fired into a vehicle, and police were called to the scene.

Smoot's other son, Trent Taylor, said he had seen police make several visits including one less than two months ago."This is the quietest neighborhood," said Smoot, who moved into the neighborhood last year after living at Fort Hood. "We have the best neighbors."

However, Smoot said the home where the shooting occurred has made her scared to leave her home.

"You're scared to go outside and get in your car. I mean, are they going to shoot me?" Smoot said.

Smoot said she still fears what could have happened if a bullet had gone astray and into her home.

Also, the Killeen Daily Herald archive showed that Reed received three years deferred probation in October 2006 in connection with a March 14, 2006, charge of assaulting a public servant.

The incident started when another man attempted to steal a case of beer from a convenience store. The man escaped with the beer into a jeep in which Reed was one of the passengers. The convenience store clerk recorded the vehicle's license plate, which led officers to an address in the 3300 block of Westrim Drive. The suspects returned and Reed punched an officer in the face as he was trying to handcuff him, a court document stated.

Also, an unrelated arrest was made Tuesday at the scene concerning a person who kept trying to re-enter the crime scene against an officer's orders, Smith said.

There is still no decision about whether charges will be filed in connection with the shooting.

"The case is still being investigated. There is a lot to look at. I can't say there won't be any (charges) tomorrow, but I don't anticipate it," Smith said.
Tuesday's homicide was Killeen's second of 2008 and it happened in the same part of town, several blocks from the Bermuda Drive duplex where Spc. Richard Gee Hanna was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. That homicide is still under investigation, Smith said.

Killeen police are continuing to investigate Tuesday's shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact KPD at 501-8830 or Crime Stoppers at 526-TIPS (8477).

I think 13 rounds is a bit much, unless it was a .22lr.

Reads like a good self defense/defense of others shoot so far.

He might have missed 12 times. Not enough info to tell.

Moral of the story? Don't hit your girlfriend or your girlfriends mother.
