Am not a competition shooter . Watch it on TV and it is hard to tell at what distances and what size steel target they are shooting. I shoot at my own backyard range , at 6 inch pie plates , at 21 and 30 feet . Keep them all in the pie plate. The steel targets on the competition shooting look huge . Just wondering.

What type of competition?

The closest you can safely shoot steel is about 7-8 yards. I've shot steel silhoutte targets at 75-100 yards in 3-gun matches several times.

I shoot steel challenge with a pistol from 8-35 yards. I shoot centerfire pistol silhouette from 50-200 meters and rimfire from 25-100 meters.

In 3-Gun we shoot steel from 100-600 yards. Anything from a 4 inch plate all the way up to a 18x24 steel IPSC target.

With a bolt gun we shoot 6-12 inch steel out past 1,100 yards.

Short answer long, it depends on the game...
