I'm trying to locate records online of my grandfather's shooting career. He was a Distinguished Rifleman, which he received while in the Army, and received it in the 1950s.

I looked on the CMP site and couldn't find the record.

A while back the CMP was aware that their distinguished shooters listing was not complete and set up requirements to update the listing. Previously each service branch maintained their own records concerning Distinguished awards and may or may not have notified the CMP (then DCM) of individual awardees. You can get your grandfather's name added to the list by following this format.

Here is a quote from the CMP website -

The CMP is continually updating its lists of Distinguished shooters. If you have information (missing badges, incorrect names, military service, military rank, hometown, dates of birth) that can help the CMP make these lists more accurate or complete, please email the CMP at [email protected]. The military service, rank and/or hometown information that is listed in CMP Distinguished records must be information that was correct at the time the badge was earned.

If that information is not readily available to you, then you may have to send away to the VA for a copy of your grandfather's military service record. The CMP will update the listing once they receive the appropriate data.

Hope this helps.

R,
Bullseye
