NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines (news) made about President George W. Bush (news - web sites) during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide."

I will NOT support anyone who lacks self-control to make such statements about our commander and chief, espeically in another country. I don't care how fustrated you are.

She could have just as easily have said "I do not support our gov't view on the war with Iraq" and just left it at but NO, she has to make a personal and insulting attack on our President.

Lee Ann Rimes has the attitude I wish more stars had. I'm paraphrasing, but when they stuck a mike in her face and asked her what she thought about war with Iraq, she replied that her views on politics don't have any bearing on her music, so she chooses to not be devisive and to concentrate on the craft that provides joy to others.

I'm kinda tired of stars that use their celebrity status to promote their misinformed pet causes such as gun control anyway.

Dixie Chicks need to lose their lead singer and find another, the two backups can sing real well, but Maines has the most annoying voice ever. That coupled with her comments about Toby kieth and our pres. can't be doing good things for the group

So, lets take away the 1st Amendment and then folk won't have to be bothered by people who exercise it. Then people who don't like what other people have to say can ask the gov't to arrest people who voice their opinions. Then we can start deleting all those other pesky ammendments and we to can be just like the rest of the world where rights are no longer guaranteed.

America, a wonderful place where people can voice their opinions without fear of being disappeared in the middle of the night.

Negative criticism is not a call for censorship. In fact, voiciferous negative criticism (like the anti Dixie Chick comments on this thread) is sign that the 1Amt is alive and kicking

They have a show here in Knoxville soon and fans were calling WIVK radio and venting. Seems they are ALL foot-stompin mad.
Most said they were either sorry they bought their ticket or that they were going to sell their ticket.

I predict however, that most of the sheeple will forgive and forget.
They will rationalize "well, if we boycotted all actors that were against the war, we would not go to any movies". Baaaaaaa....

The genuinely nice thing about this (remarkable) situation is that this opinion that they have voiced echos exactly what all the "terrorist loving liberals" who oppose the war have been saying. Except, it ain't coming from a liberal so the rednecks can't use that to bash them with.

I would applaud them for the fact they don't feel obligated to chime in the republican party line on this and used their own brains. I also agree that they (and we all) have the right to criticize a president who does stupid things, and IMO it is our duty to do so. I am proud of these ladies.
