Does anyone have any examples of a DIY rifle rest that they've made for their AR? I'm specifically looking for a DIY rest because I've got a ton of wood scraps that I could use. I'm tired of stacking my sand bags higher than they were designed for.
Not a full "rest" but I have a basic design for a rear support tripod that I'm working on right now. My techno-critter son has built a 3D printer from a kit and is cranking out a lot of things from toys for his baby to gadgets for inventors, and even a couple of caliber specific loading blocks for me. I have him printing out a couple of the critical parts for my tripod stand. He should have them ready for me now and I will get them hopefully in a couple of weeks. If this post is still around when I put this thing together, I'll take a few pics and give a range report and post them up.
I had thought about the 10 round mags, but the pistol grip is as much or more of a problem than the 20 round mags that I use. I'm going to try a bipod (though I know its not ideal for precision shooting) if I can't come up with a decent rest design.
Two sand bags, a 20rd magazine, an elbow and maybe a rear bag. Just lean into it so the magazine well is tight to the sand bag and it will be very stable.
I made a bench box 40 years ago that I used until I got a tripod rest. It's about 6" high and about 12" wide. You lay it on the bench for a front rest and the open end faces you. The side laying on the table is about 12" deep and the top is about 6" deep. I cut a handle slot in the 12" deep side, so you can pick it up by that handle, throw your sandbags in there and carry it to the truck. I'll try to get some pictures up. I still use it to keep target pasters, stapler, a few tools, etc. in.
