I may have asked before in a different thread, but I'm interested in coloring a couple throwing hatchets and possibly some gun parts.
Can this be done easily and affordably? What temperatures are needed? I'm hoping a good bed of coal in the wood stove will work, but will wait for any help you guys offer.

Pretty good article and you can see it is not real easy. Coloring can be produced by use of a torch, but that color is not durable and really needs a coat of transparent varnish over it to protect it.

The article says "gun actions in days gone by were made with low carbon steel". Not really; many, including Colt's, were not made from steel at all, but from wrought iron. The case hardening was needed to make them wear resistant. Other companies did the same thing, but not all produced a colored case hardening.

Nice link, bbg. Have tucked this one away, somewhere safe.

Still waiting on that shoulder stock, by the way. Ya just gotta love customs...
