I've been looking at Tokarevs and Nagants, due to helpful advise on this forum and others. I've bought the Tok, and am considering a Nagant (except they want 3x too much $).

Reading on Nagants I read that .32 S&W cartridges work just fine in them, which was a relief because ammo supply is a big deal. Then I wondered if it would be OK to case bullets for those cartridges and fire them in a Nagant revolver.

And now I'm wondering, can I re-use my S&B 7.62TT brass and load any commercial or cast .32 bullets in there?

If there was some way to get commonality and assure supply of both cartridges it'd be a real treat.

Thanks;
Scott

You'll need to slug the bore of the Tokarev. Some people with .310-.311 bores on their CZ-52s use .32 bullets for reloading 7.62 Tok. Others like me have .308 bores and don't use .312 32cal bullets. The "standard" for the load is .308.

Yep, slug it. I've got several CZ-52's. The only barrel that I have that is the "correct" size of .308 is an aftermarket one. My largest slugs out at .313! It really doesn't seem to matter to it though. It will still make nice groups with factory ammo.

Once you know what size you need, you can start searching around to find it. National Bullet has a couple listed as .312 but the 95gr. SWC's actually are .313. I Don't know about the 77gr round nose but you could contact them to find out. Another is Penn Bullets. They have a couple of choices in 30 and 32 cal. and some custom sizing options. Sierra makes a .308" 85gr round nose and Hornady has an XTP at .309".

30cal

both guns are nominal 30 cal.the tok is same as 30 mauser.the russians put that round in tok,/mauser an sub gun.use 32/20 brass for the revolver.they were selling the nagant for $79.

7.62x25mm Tokarev is listed in "Cartridges of the World" by Frank Barnes as .307" bullet.

The grooves on the Tokarev pistols vary.

I find that I can use a larger diameter bullet than the grooves and get no pressure spike as long as the cartridge drops in and chambers and falls out of the chamber [like Ackley said in 1967].

But if the bullet is so fat that the neck of the cartridge is wedged in the neck of the chamber, or the bullet is squeezed into the lands or throat, then there will be a pressure spike from the big bullet [ala what Ackley said].

What does it all mean?
The groove diameter is not as important for avoiding pressure spike as much as the chamber neck diameter.
