Do chamber inserts still exist?

My old man has a very old SXS. He has an insert that goes fully into the barrel, and is about 18 inches long. This converts the barrel to a 20 gauge from a 12 gauge. He said that they used to make these to convert shotguns to pretty much anything including a 45-70 insert. Do they even make anything like this anymore? I would love to get one in .270 or .30-30 for my shotgun if i could. I wouldn't mind doing using the shotgun as a single shot.

Skeet shooters use them.

I don't think anyone else does, and I haven't heard about rifle inserts in current production.

Yes, I mean my father, pop, sire, or dad. I call him old man as he is a grandfather enough times to need his toes to count his grandchildren and is retired twice.

Thanks ArmedBear,
Looks like I am out of luck then unless I get very luck at a gun show.

There's a gentilrmen who has an ad in the Shotgun News that has many types of adapters unfortunately I don't remember his name but the company's first name is "Ace" I believe. E Arthur Brown can tell you his name as they buy adapters from them.

I have Briley Sidekicks in my Browning. They take the gun from 12ga. to 20ga. They work very well, but get VERY dirty and are tough to clean.

Shoot safe, John

I have a set of chambermates to convert my SxS from 16 to 28 and they work very well. They stay in the tube and have an extractor that fits over the guns.

The insert becomes the chamber and should be manufactured to contain the pressure. I would ask that someone else comment on how the shotgun's face will hold up to the impact of a rifle cartridge or what might happen in the shotgun barrel just in front of the insert. I just don't know.

Just my opinion here....I would only use inserts for other shotgun gauges. I would also buy the full length inserts made for the specific gun. I wouldn't attempt to use an insert for a rifled bullet in a shotgun. They make better tools for shooting rifled projectiles including shotgun slugs.
